Baker of Beverly Hills, who spoke at the branch's annual meeting Wednesday night Sept. 24 in Anaheim. In the top speaking assignment of the meeting, Dr. Baker hit at cancer "quackery" which borders, he said, on "witchcraft." There are more prosecutions in the courts now, claimed Dr. Baker, in which "quack" operators claimed to cure cancer by sticking pins in voodoo dolls. Recent developments in so-called miracle drugs and in the use of electronic and radiological equipment have opened the way for "quacks" to exploit what Dr. Baker called "phoney drugs and pills and complicated gadgetry." Medical "quacks" are not "shabbily dressed down-and-outers who operate in dirty offices located in back alleys," said Dr. Baker. Many of them attract high class clientele and operate in ultra-modern medical clinics surrounded by white-clad technicians and assistants, he claimed. Some "quacks" operate in a pseudo-religious atmosphere, said Dr. Baker.
