Plastering Industry Due for Cleanup!
Former plastering contractor, George T. Patton, 9362 Melba Drive, Garden Grove, California, got to thinking about plasterers carrying around water in leaky brushes. They use water to clean plaster from wood, metal trim, brick, and paneling; also to smooth the final coat of plaster. The trouble was that most of the water leaked from the brush before the plasterer got to the wall; then they would come back and dirty the water with the brush. You can't clean with the dirty water, especially when most of it has leaked into puddles on the floor.
With the advent of mechanization of the application of plaster, the plasterer finally made a step forward from the ancient Egyptians. Rather than apply the plaster by hand, with the aid of the trowel, he can now stand back and shoot it on . . . much like spray painting. While these plastering machines increased greatly the amount of material applied, it also made the leaky brush seem more ridiculous because of the added cleaning problems.
If there was some method of scraping off the over-spray and leaving it clean, the plastering machine would be even more effective.
The answer came about five o'clock one morning, just in time to allow George to shoot the exterior soffit (ceiling) of a medical building. There were very few exterior walls to be plastered but hundreds of feet of metal trim and finish wood to be cleaned. With his first prototype in hand.
The answer came about five o'clock one morning, just in time to allow George to shoot the exterior soffit (ceiling) of a medical building. There were very few exterior walls to be plastered but hundreds of feet of metal trim and finish wood to be cleaned. With his first prototype in hand, he ordered his men to use his Plaster Master Gun on the exterior soffit. The job came out neat as a pin, in very quick time. The second coat was also gun applied, which was without rough spots or joints...so often the case when large soffits are done by hand. The two guns, plastering and water, made up for one other thing George had done about five o'clock one other morning; he had not charged for 1/3 of the soffit, when the job was figured.
Two of the country's largest plastering contractors George M. Raymond Co. and Russ C. Shinnefield Inc., were quick to realize the potential of this invention to the plastering industry...they are the largest users of the newly perfected Duvalve Method. George Patton quit contracting to form the Duvalve Company to produce the water guns.
Dick Thomas, a Raymond employee, who is in charge of the 60 million dollar La Mirada Shopping Center is a top booster and is training his men in their use. He finds he gets better work in less time and is more able to satisfy the developer of the center.
The plasterer may now clean all surfaces with the ease of spray painting. The thin, knife like edge of the V shaped spray acts much like a putty knife, in that it gets under the material and peels it away. The Duvalve guns have adjustable tips that may be turned down to a gentle spray by simply a twist of the extended tip. The gentle spray applies an even film of clean water over the finish coat enabling the plasterer to smooth the surface to hard dense mirror finish. Again on the exterior stucco he may do all the cleaning with the cutting V twist to a gentle spray for the clean even film to allow a painted sandpaper like texture.

The graduation exercises, marking the end of nine weeks of "boot camp", included a full dress parade and review before military officials and civilian dignitaries.
In nine weeks of instruction, the "raw recruit" is developed into a Navy Bluejacket, ready for duty with the fleet.
