Discuss Cafeterias in Centralia District Members of the board of trustees of Centralia School district have been giving serious consideration to opening cafeterias in schools this fall. As new schools were built during the past five years, facilities have been included for a school lunch program, with the hope that cafeteria operation could be undertaken. Centralia's board members have always worked toward a type of educational program desired by the majority of people within the district. They have taken seriously their obligation to taxpayers to conduct the finest educational program possible with the least cost in dollars. The question confronting board members is how to give the most for the least, when each additional service costs more money. In a careful study of reports from neighboring elementary school districts, trustees learned that very few districts operated cafeterias last year without going into debt. This deficit must be made up from tax money. Centralia School district is already operating on an extremely tight budget with a 90c legal tax limit and an additional 30c override. If cafeteria operation is included in next year's budget, board members fear they may have to ask taxpayers for still another tax override. If cafeterias were started, meals would probably cost 30c per child. The school district would need to join the State School Lunch program in order to receive surplus items and additional financial support for each lunch served. At best, present state support to school districts amounts to only 3e to 4e per meal served, and the state would have administrative control over the kinds of food served to meet their requirements for a balanced diet. Additional paper work would be required, it is anticipated, necessitating more clerical help in the administration office. Additional tax money would not go toward purchase of food for the cafeterias as much as towards equipment in the kitchens, bookkeeping for purchasing and supervision, paying salaries of personnel and maintenance, insurance, transportation, supplies and myriads of other expenses. Palmer G. Campen, assistant superintendent in charge of business, to bend out letters of explanation and inquiry to all parents of children attending school in the Centralia School district. Board members will study any swans on return postcards inclosed in each letter in order to determine how much demand there is and what parents and taxpayer think of a school cafeteria program in Centralia School district next year. The first Navy nurses to serve outside the U.S., reported to the Philippines in 1910, and shortly after to Guam, Honolulu, Yokohama, Samoa, Virgin Islands, and Cuba. LEGAL NOTICE (Pub.
