Building Permits Here Compare with Record for 1955 (From Anaheim Newsletter) If you're looking for a recession, don't look for it in the Anaheim City Building Department. The desk of Chief Building Inspector Homer Wallace is simply jumping with hot statistics. The impact of them is this: Anaheim is doing business in building permits to compare with fabulous 1955, which was the record year for Orange County. With $15,000,000 in building construction logged for the first four months of this year, Anaheim was fourth in southern California, behind Los Angeles, San Diego and Long Beach. By comparison, the figure for the first four months of 1955 was $7,212,000; for 1956, $14,622,000; and for 1957, $11,642,000. A Better Year Building has taken a different tack this year than in 1955. Illustration: in the entire year of 1955, there were only 178 multiple unit buildings built. By contrast, in the first quarter of this year 229 multiples have already been processed. Another illustration: In April of 1955, only five swimming pool permits were issued. In April 1958, 33 pool permits were issued. Again, April 1955, logged $52,-000 in manufacturing and $490,000 in commercial building permits, compared to $82,000 in manufacturing and $692,000 commercial permits this past April. The first quarter of 1955 saw 1280 dwelling units built here, the largest portion of them single homes. This year has seen the start of 1185 units, with a large percentage of these multiples. "At the present rate of application," guesses Wallace, "it is entirely conceivable that Anaheim is headed for another 1955 as far as total building construction is concerned." Evening Sessions College credit and high school courses will be offered in the evening summer session of the Santa Ana Schools Evening Division on the Santa Ana College campus, starting Monday, June 16. The term closes August 8. Director Stuart Carrier said registration will be completed at the first meeting of a class. There is a $6 fee for all students over 21, irrespective of the number of classes taken, while instruction is free for those under 21.
