EDITORIALS How Ethical Can You Be? (Reprinted from Temple City Time) The lawyers of the land, at least when they speak through their mouthpiece, the American Bar Association, like to stress the ethics of their profession. Some of our best friends are lawyers, and we applaud their continuing aspiration toward a higher moral plane, but sometimes they look slightly silly in their official struggle for virtue. Lawyers are great people to write canons and codes, that being part of their trade. One of their canons prohibits advertising as unethical. So, diving from that springboard, the bar association’s Committee on Professional Ethics met in Chicago recently and came up with this piece of judicial pomposity: It is unethical to wish a Happy New Year to your friends or supporters if you do it through the columns of a newspaper. The committee handed down opinions which disapproved of the publication, in the form of a joint Christmas greeting, of an advertisement signed by 22 persons, including 10 lawyers. That was “advertising.” It also condemned the distribution by a law firm of a booklet to serve as a diary or appointment book and containing Christmas greetings. More “advertising.” Another instance which aroused the indignation of the ethics committee was the publication by a city councilman and his wife of New Year greetings. Publication of such greetings through newspaper columns is not uncommon, but in this case the councilman was a lawyer, so his seasonal message was unethical. As Brown sees it, all newsmen: “A fundamental is whether the progress Earl Warren is to be made reactionary forces on the inant in California.” Brown gets right on further along in his reel public instrumentalities it is important that they of idea in our society. It is quite certain A Vacation at Home Vacation time will soon be here and the annual problem is now being discussed, "Where will we GO this year?" Here's a suggestion for an answer to that question. You'll laugh at the suggestion, but hear me out. My suggestion is: try a "stay-at-home" vacation this year and really enjoy a vacation. A few of the many things you can do on a stay-at-home vacation are these: first thing to do is slip on your back yard clothes and go out there and look around. Just stand there, right in the middle of it and give it a good once over. Is everything neat and trim and ready for company? Is your back yard ready for inspection as though the garden contest judges were coming tomorrow? Probably not and you have been too busy to do all the little things you wanted. Get the whole family back there and really clean it up. That little job will probably take a day or so of your vacation time and you'll have sore muscles and you'll get up slowly the second morning. Now you are ready to have fun. Get the barbecue unit and supplies ready this day. Check your outdoor furniture, your torches and bug lights. You are going to be entertaining every other night for perhaps a week or so. You now have an opportunity to have those friends over for barbe- and have been too busy to do all the little things you wanted. Get the whole family back there and really clean it up. You now have an opportunity to have those friends over for barbecue dinners. You've been too busy to see your friends, remember? And going away vacations don't help this situation. Here is a chance to catch up, or perhaps get ahead of all your good friends. Informal barbecue dinners lend themselves perfectly to good old-fashioned visiting and relaxing evenings. Afraid you'll put on weight? No, I don't think you will. Not if you get out and push the mower, trim the hedge, edge the lawn with those darned hard-pushing edgers and perhaps even saw some low-hanging branches from the trees. You'll get exercise enough to hold your weight down even though you are eating steaks every night. And if you should get tired of steaks (what a thought), try hot dogs or even hamburgers for in-between nights. You'll save gas bills, motel bills, eating bills and lots of other vacation expenses and with this money you have an opportunity to really have fun at home. Try it this year. Brown on the Fence, Already Edmund G. (Pat) Brown, who has made California an excellent attorney general, with a few exceptions, is not doing so well in his bid for Governor of the state of California. His brush with the Orange County Press Thursday night and his headon collision with his opponent-Friday night at Ojai were anything but complimentary to the Democrat candidate for governor. As Brown sees it, according to his prepared release for newsmen: "A fundamental issue in the present campaign is whether the progressive influence of Hiram Johnson and Karl Warren is to be maintained in this state, or whether reactionary forces on the far right are again to become dominant in California." Brown gets right on top of the fence when he states further along in his release: "For my part, in considering public instrumentalities like our two great parties, I think this is important that they keep returning to the main stream idea in our society. More specifically stated, it is important that the conservative party not become more and more conservative, so that it acts as a drag on social progress; and that the more liberal party never lists so far as to change progress into fickleness." Talking out of both sides of his mouth Brown did his best to answer forthright questions shot at him by the Orange County newsmen. He confused what he likes to call it, the "so called" right-to-work proposition for California voters' consideration this fall. He confused the issue on California water when he was asked what he would do about the situation if he were governor. He was completely lost when he talked about taxes and our state economy. He ranks political campaigns have been made too long and accused Knight and Knowland of neglecting their official duties saying Knight is spending one-fourth of his elected time to campaign. As this reporter considers the interviews with the two candidates, Brown is out after votes and is talking as a rate-getter. Knowland has definite commitments on controversial issues and is explaining his position. He is envoking to influence voters that his thinking is right. Brown would like to have voters think both sides are partly right and a compromise is possible with his program. Knowland has definite commitments on conversational issues and is explaining his position. He is enwarming to influence voters that his thinking is right. Brown would like to have voters think both sides are partly right and a compromise is possible with his program. It is quite certain that if the election were held this week Bill Knowland would be the winner. If Brown continues to straddle the fence, as mentioned above, he’s going to be caught right there at general election time with the supporters supporting Knowland and his clear cut platform statements.
