CURIOSITY—Donna Jean Tilley, four-year-old daughter of Mrs. Nancy Tilley of 9541 Banta, Anahelm, doesn't aim to be folled in her desire to watch workmen construct the $27,000 home to be given away at the 1958 Orange County Home Show. The home will be built in secret on the Orange County Fairgrounds behind an eight-foot wall. If carpenter, Gorman Miller, of Garden Grove didn't come down off the ladder fast enough to stop Miss Tilley, however, young "junior sidewalk superintendents" probably will find a peephole in the fence.
AWARD-WINNING ART USED IN CALENDARS
To illustrate its 1958 calendar the New York Life Insurance Company has collected from all sections of the country 12 prize-winning contemporary paintings—ten of which are water colors.
Accenting the American scene, the paintings represent some of the finest water color work being done in the country today. Each of the 12 pictures, representing a different month, has already received an award in art shows throughout the country.
Shown (top) is the July illustration for the calendar, "Old Wood and Rocks," by Herbert J. Gute, which was awarded an Active Members Prize in Washington, D.C. The painting for February, "Street Scene" is the work of English-born John C. Pellew, a member of the National Academy.
The calendar's utilitarian value is increased by the large white space available for notations and memoranda.
The calendar has been well received, and the company is plan-ning to use a similar format—with different contemporary paintings—in 1959. A copy of this year's calendar, with the paintings reproduced in full color, will be furnished upon request at New York Life's local general office or at the company's home office, 51 Madison Avenue, New York City.
