Our Neighbor-Store Has It.
If you read the Richard's Lido Market advertisement in the Orange County section of the Los Angeles Times last Sunday you might think that "Dick" Richards has the Christmas spirit of "Peace on Earth, Good Will Toward Men", but good. And he does, but it's nothing unusual for "Dick" or his wonderful market.
Here's the message in his advertisement:
"Richard's Lido Market is one of the Lido Shops. Most of us who invite you to do business in this area belong to the Newport Harbor Chamber of Commerce . . . and the current project-of this august organization is to convince you that "Everything in Santa's Bag Can Be Purchased In The Newport Harbor Area". Which means that if you can't find it at Richard's, one of our neighboring stores has it! The Chamber of Commerce has invited Santa Claus to visit all sections of the Harbor in the coming weeks . . . and he'll be chucking chins and giving gifts to your liddies here among the Lido Shops."
I read every word of that advertisement because I was amazed to think that a grocery store would devote its entire advertising space to such a "good-will" message.
That's the kind of cooperation that pays off in a big way for everyone concerned. You can't get mad at a guy who tells you "If we don't have it, our neighbors do". In other words, the shopper feels quite confident that a shopping tour to Newport Beach will satisfy his or her needs and there is no need to go elsewhere. As a matter of fact, it's almost a challenge to you to go there and see if they can satisfy you.
What a refreshing difference to the type of advertising which reads, "We will not be undersold". "Lowest Prices in Town". After all, price is not everything the shopper is looking for. Even if something is sold below cost, but the merchant fails to please the customer, he has lost the effect of his price reduction.
Co-operation is most important. And we hope that the Anaheim merchants will continue to cooperate with one another and remember that their competition is not with their neighbor stores, but with shopping centers elsewhere.

A New University?
There may be a surprising turn to plans for locating the Orange county state college on the "upper ranch" lands of Samuel Kraemer. Almost every member of the committee named by Senator John Murdy to aid in selecting a site who has visited the area in Santa Ana Canyon takes a look at the beauty of the section and reaches the opinion "this is it." State and county officials have been checking distances to the populated sections of the county, and can visualize the opportunity to lay out a campus on vacant land and watch it develop.
The surprise may be that in the same general area state education officials may decide to locate a new university, a branch of the huge California institution.
The four year college has an appropriation of $1,650,000 and the money must be spent in Orange county. Educators announce they expect to have this college functioning in 1959. The university is another project, at the talking stage now, but top officials have been checking and they may decide to get adjoining land and start a university. The state college seeks 200 acres of land and the university site would be 1,000 acres. By utilizing portions of the Kraemer land, and securing property of nearby land owners, the large site could be obtained. — Frank Rospaw in his "Orange Peals" column in the Placentia Courier.
