The little girl, smiling across three centuries from under her coifed bonnet, can be your little girl. She can even, perhaps, be you. Dress her parents as you are dressed and they, like you, become faces in the American crowd. These Pilgrim people, your own spiritual ancestors, are a lot like you, even though they speak your tongue in the cadences of the Holy Bible. Yet there is a difference. The Renaissance, exploding over Europe, has hardly touched these sturdy folk. They are recreating in their own lives, on American soil, the far sterner folkways of our Pilgrim ancestors. And this is a thing to ponder long upon. Because for their small number these steeple-hatted Pilgrims had an unbelievably stunning impact upon the American future. They left an impress of tremendous depth in the matrix of our American culture. For all the years that have turned between us, we are more like them than any other people from whose loins we have also sprung. Today we are a world nation, a great composite and, we hope, a noble one. Men and women of every race and creed call the United States of America their home. We are fashioned of all peoples. And this is good. Yet those things that all of us instinctively call American: the stubborn granite streak, the independent strain, the knack to improvise, the conscience that will not conform to the crowd, the flint-hard realism clothed in a chuckle, the pithy advice to Trust in God ... But Keep Your Powder Dry ... these things come to us unchanged from Massachusetts Bay. They come from the man with the Bible and Blunderbuss. The man with the Book and the Gun. We can be thankful for this. We should be. not conform to the crowd, the flint-hard realism clothed in a chuckle, the pithy advice to Trust in God ...
