Anaheim Man Ends Duty Tour Thru Northwest Passage David E. Caffee, SN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Earl L. Caffee of 825 W. La Palma Street, Anaheim, recently returned from the history-making Northwest Passage voyage aboard the ship, CGC Storis (WAG 38). The Storis was one of three ships making the voyage, the other two being the USCGC Bramble (WAGL 392), and the USCGC Spar (WAGL 403). The ships began their voyage July 1 from Seattle, Wash., to participate in the annual resupply of far northern bases. Their assignment was to conduct hydrographic surveys of Arctic waters and to probe for a water route of sufficient depth to support deep draft ships. The need for such a route is emphasized by the unpredictable movements of a polar ice pack that annually recedes from the land at Point Barrow, Alaska, permitting a brief/shipping season. Ships supplying northwestern and central coastal sites must unload and get beyond Point Barrow before the pack returns, or be forced to winter in. The ships passed the Arctic Circle in the Bering Strait on July 10 and 64 days later (Sept. 21), they recrossed the Circle in Davis strait, completing the passage and sailing 4,525 miles of hazardous, semi-charted and unknown waters between these points. County Judging Teams Place In FFA Meeting Facing stiff competition in livestock judging events at the 14th annual Future Farmers of America field day, several Orange County boys and teams placed well up in the scoring totals and brought home ribbons. The field day, now in its 14th year under the sponsorship of Bank of America, was held Saturday, Oct. 12, at Antelope Valley Fair Grounds, Lancaster. About 300 boys from 41 high schools and three colleges of Southern California participated. The Orange Coast College team won first place in the Young Farmers competitions, running up a livestock judging total of 716 points out of a possible 780. The team was composed of Donald Koebrich of Anaheim, Rudy Martinez of Trabuco Canyon, and Richard Crossley of Garden Grove. Fullerton Union High School took second place.
