Toastmasters 1205 Debate Timely Subjects at Meeting The fur flew as Toastmasters Club No. 1205 of Fullerton debated controversial subjects during the table topics portion of their last dinner meeting. The proposition "There should be bigger and better beauty contests" brought calls ranging from compulsory participation to the exclamation they are too controversial to be properly judged. The subject, "Television is the greatest cultural achievement in the last 10 years", encouraged the proponents to envisage education for all in their homes. Those opposed were vehement in their opinion that people soak up too much trivia to compensate for the "culture" that comes through. Gene Downard of Schlumberger Corp., spoke impromptu for seven minutes on "The eyes of the oil field" explaining the operations of different technical equipment used in determining the location and magnitude of oil deposits. Gene was followed by Jack Francis of Northrop Aircraft, speaking for five minutes on "Juvenile delinquency". The problem of delinquency was placed squarely in the hands of the parents because they have the moral responsibility to find a healthy outlet for exuberant youth. This effort won for Jack the much coveted trophy "Best Speech of the Evening". John Titus of Rheem Manufacturing Company, outlined the most accepted theory as to how the earth came into being and traced its evolution through geological time to its probable end under the subject "The Earth Is Born." John was named most improved speaker and acclaimed winner o: He table topics award. A thorough evaluation was made for the benefit of each speaker. General Evaluator Bob Gallagher ably led this portion of the program. Learning from evaluation is stressed as one of the important tools of Toastmastering for individual improvement is made only when efforts are properly directed.
