Daffodils Reward The Gardener Few investments in spring bulb Dowers hold as much reward for the California gardener as does the daffodil. This harHILGENFELD MORTUARY Lawn Flower Garden Service 20 E Broadway, Anselm PHONE KE 5-4105 dy grower blooms the first year after planting, and increases in quantity and quality year after year without continual re-planting each fall. More properly known as narcissus, the daffodil is one of the oldest cultivated flowers. Native to the eastern hemisphere, it has spread to the corners of the earth. The daffodil can be planted in many species and varieties which provide a continual bloom from early to late spring—a spread of two months or more. Plant representatives of each daffodil species throughout the garden and you will enjoy a stunt parade of yellow blooms for weeks. A suggested ing for continual bloom could include the Cyclamineus hybrida February Gold, for the bloom. Next come the yellow trumpets: the best known representative of this class is Alfred. White-colored trumpets represented by Mrs. E. H. Lage, bloom next, followed the large cupped varieties. Tune and Tunis are among group which is very effective. A suggested plant for continual blooms could include the Cyclamen hybrid, urinary Gold, for the first time. Next come the yellow spets: the best known representative of this class is King ed. White-colored trumpets presented by Mrs. E. H. Krebs bloom next, followed by large cupped varieties. For and Tunis are among this group which is very effective in the garden. The smaller cups, such as Hades and Diana Kasner, bloom later and following them are the white Poeticus types, best represented by Actea. The jonquill and triandrus hybrids finish daffodil season; Trevithian and Moonshine represent these two groups, respectively. Daffodils can be planted many ways with attractive results. The California Association of Nurserymen suggests container-growing daffodils, forcing them for early bloom indoors (which can be done for only one season with the same bulbs) or potting them and leaving them to bloom according to their natural schedule. February Gold can be started in pebbles and water in early November and kept in a dark, cool place for three weeks or so for a forced bloom by Christmas. In the garden bed, plant groups of daffodils in front of shrubs or evergreens, in little pockets of soil, in a rock-garden, or in drifts along a garden path. If you have a very large garden, try massing them in a natural almost-wild growing styles. They may also be planted with Dutch Iris or summer annuals. Daffodils can be planted from early to late fall. Cultivate the soil deeply but add no manure. Make sure there is good drainage. If the soil is poor, scatter enough bonemeal to cover the area and dig it in before planting. Set the bulbs eight inches apart at a depth two and a half times their size, taking into account the texture of the soil. If it is particularly heavy, have four to five inches of clean earth over the bulbs; in light soil, six to eight inches. Bulbs set deep enough to avoid damage when you spade the soil will not need replanting until they show signs of deterioration from overcrowding. You needn't worry about pests or diseases for the daffodil rarely is their victim. Plant your daffodils to face the sun; all varieties enjoy full sun except the later blooming ones. particularly in southern California. Chalk is made up largely of the shells of protozoa, microscopic animals, according to the Encyclopaedia Britannica.
