Local Man Joins Hughes As First County Employee
Ken Toland, Anaheim resident, was hired by Hughes Aircraft Company and is the first employee from Orange County to work in its new multi-million dollar electronics plant to be constructed in the Sunny Hills district of Fullerton.
Toland, 27-years old, a draftsman, was engaged in layout work for lease buildings adjacent to Fullerton Municipal Airport, and in facilities work for the permanent plant, according to Harold Swenson, plant engineer.
Toland is the first of hundreds of Orange County residents which Hughes expects to employ for its new ground systems division, most of them involved in engineering research and production of unique new electronic development.
He attended South Dakota School of Mines and Arizona State College, and was most recently employed in the design section of the Orange County Highways Department. He was attracted to the local area during a hitch with the Marine Air Control squadron at El Toro Marine Base. He plans to continue his education under the GI bill and the various educational programs offered employees by Hughes.
Toland is married to a native of Fullerton girl, the former Janet Maynard, and they live with their two children at 9601 Kanton Ave., Anaheim.
The Portuguese mariner Juan Cabrillo and party aboard the San Salvador and Victoria were the first white men to view the coast of California.
BBB Established In County, Office In Santa Ana
The Anaheim Chamber of Commerce, in past meetings, have thoroughly checked into the possibility of a Better Business Bureau in this area and found there was a vital need for its service to the retailer. The Better Business Bureau is now established and has an office in Santa Ana.
The steering committee composed of representatives of Chambers, retailers and industries, and spearheaded by Phil Brown of Santa Ana Business Men's Association, have concluded the final details. Byron Howe will be the manager of the Bureau at the Santa Ana office, the location being chosen due to its geographical center for county it was announced corporation has however, this connection only with Better Business Rates have been and a membership underway.
