Selected at the Naval Training Center, San Diego, as apprentice petty officer third class was Gilbert T. Koehler, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert T. Koehler of 400 W. Vermont Ave., Anaheim. The apprentice petty officers, graduated Mar. 16, were chosen from the ranks of the seamen recruits to assist the company commanders. The selection was made on the basis of aptitude and leadership qualities of each individual.
Lloyd J. Wilson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Kennith L. Wilson of 1413 Beacon Ave., Anaheim, graduated from recruit training Mar. 9, at the Naval Training Center in San Diego. The graduation exercises, marking the end of nine weeks of "boot camp", included a full dress parade and review before military officials and civilian dignitaries.
Navy Ens. Anthony L. Budlong, son of Mr. and Mrs. Howard L. Budlong of 20046 Canyon Blvd., Anaheim, is scheduled to arrive at San Diego, Mar. 25, aboard the seaplane tender USS Curtiss from the Antarctic. The Curtiss was one of 12 U.S. Navy and Coast Guard ships supporting the International Geophysical Year program in Antarctica this year. Among the passengers aboard were 140 Seabees who Marine Pfc. Antonio Agundez, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Tony Agundez of 6551 Taylor St.; Marine MSgt. James T. Jordan, son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter T. Jordan of 10606 Dixie Dr., and Marine Pfc. Arnold R. Craig, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. A. Fecher,a combat veteran of World War II and the Korean War, is assigned to Marine Fighter Squadron 241 at Los Alamitos Naval Air Station as a jet engine mechanic.Here received the certificate for attending 100 per cent of scheduled drills during the last year.
GUIDANCE OF THE Marine Deserve Training Detachpep Fecher was presented thereto by his squadron commander Col. Donald L. Clark.in ceremonies at the Los Angeles installation.

The 11-week course included instruction in all basic military subjects and the firing of all basic infantry weapons. Upon completion of training, the new Marines were assigned to a unit for further infantry training, or to one of the many Marine Corps schools.

1½ cups sifted flour
½ teaspoon salt
¼ cup blanched almonds, chopped fine
½ cup shortening
5 to 6 tablespoons cold water Filling
4 cups (1 lb.) cranberries
½ cup water
2½ cups sugar
½ cup flour
2 cups finely chopped apples
¼ cup blanched almonds, chopped fine
Silt flour and salt; add nuts. Cut in shortening. Sprinkle water over mixture, stirring with lork until dough is just moist enough to hold together. Form ⅓ of dough into ball. On floured board, roll out ½ inches larger than inverted 9-inch piepan. Fit loosely into pan.
Filling: Cook cranberries in water until they burst, 7 to 10
