Deceased Vets May Share in Final Benefit
Most wartime and some peace-time veterans, when they die, are entitled to the Nation's final tokens of appreciation for a purposeful life. According to Ben Liebermann, Orange County Veterans Service Officer, these are: burial in a national cemetery or $150 in lieu thereof to defray burial costs; an American flag to drape the casket, which is later given to the closest survivor or friend of the veteran and a headstone or grave marker of marble or bronze.
There are two national cemeteries in California, one at Fort Rosenkranz, near San Diego, and the other at San Bruno, south of San Francisco.
In the case of a veteran buried privately, the law allows up to $150 for payment of burial, funeral and transportation expenses. This allowance may be applied to almost any item or service customarily furnished in connection with a burial and funeral service. The undertaker who had charge of the funeral may bill the Veterans Administration for the money, or the VA may pay it to some other person who used personal funds to pay these expenses.
Burial flags to drape the casket at a veteran's funeral may be obtained at most post offices.

Candy-cane wire—not good to eat but very good for getting phone service to folks living in rural areas. It's a kind of cable—six pairs of brightly colored wires wrapped around a supporting core. Candy-cane wire serves as many people as six separate lines would and is much easier to put up and maintain. The colors make it easier to identify lines. Candy-cane wire is one of the many developments that helps us meet the growing telephone needs of the Pacific West.
