California Bank Merges with Newport Bank The Newport Harbor Bank and California Bank, Los Angeles, have reached an agreement whereby the Newport Harbor Bank will be merged with and operated as an office of California Bank. J. T. Van Dyke, president of the Newport Harbor Bank, and Frank L. King, president of California Bank, in a joint statement announced today that the arrangements for the proposed merger have been approved by the boards of directors of both banks. The merger is not expected to result in any changes in personnel of the Newport Harbor Bank, King said, J. T. Van Dyke, president, will become a vice president of California Bank. Subject to the approval of stockholders of both banks, it is expected that the actual transfer of business will take place about April 12, 1957. California Bank has 58 offices in Los Angeles and Orange Counties. Orange County offices of the bank are located in Anaheim, Brea, Fullerton, with three in Santa Ana. The Newport Harbor Bank has resources in excess of $6,000,000. California Highway Patrol Warns of Speed Drivers who speed are driving themselves to death, says the California Highway Patrol. "With more and more speed being built into motor vehicles, fatal accidents involving excessive speed are increasing in number," stated Patrol Commissioner B. R. Caldwell, "This is evidenced by a 24 per cent increase in fatal run off the roadway type of accidents and an over-all increase of 12 per cent in fatal accidents involving excessive speed." "Speed is the chief contributing factor in about one-third of all traffic accidents and nearly 44 per cent of all fatal traffic accidents," Caldwell declared. "A more realistic approach by drivers to the hazards of excessive speed is necessary." "The speed available in today's cars can kill if used imprudently," the commissioner concluded. "The smart driver uses speed well, never beyond the safe limits and always within the stated or posted limits."
