Taxes collected on taxable SAFEW Your Nearest Safeway GM Raises Wage of 395,000 Employees General Motors today announced an upward revision of two cents per hour in its cost-of-living allowance to approximately 395,000 hourly rate employees resulting from an increase in the nation's cost-of-living index. The revision becomes effective with the first pay period after Dec. 1. The GM hourly rate employees, therefore, will receive a total hourly cost-of-living allowance of 13 cents per hour for the months of December, January and February. Approximately 107,000 eligible salaried employees will receive an equivalent increase of $10 in their quarterly cost-of-living allowance. Thus their total cost-of-living allowance for the three-month period will be $65. Under the GM wage formula, wages are reviewed quarterly and adjusted in line with the Consumer Price Index of the U.S. Labor Department's Bureau of Labor Statistics. The BLS Index for October 15, made public today, is 117.7 compared with 117.0 for July 15, the date upon which the cost-of-living allowance for the last quarter was based. The next review of the cost-of-living allowance will be in March based on the January 15 BLS' Index.
