It grows to a height of 4 to 5 feet and has a glossy, bronze-tipped foliage, and a white flower resembling those of common myrtle. It is best suited to climates similar to that in which oranges thrive. Although it will tolerate a few degrees of frost, it will die when consistently exposed to frost conditions. The Pineapple Guava (Feljoa sellowiana) is a sub-tropical shrub that bears a small pear-shaped, green fruit excellent for canning. It will tolerate a few degrees of frost but it grows to eight with canna-like follors of yellow, buff dense spikes. The prefers ample shade, but full sun. As a large specimen plant the Abyssinian Banana (Musa ensete) is impressive. It is strictly ornamental and should be planted in a protected area. For rich fragrance in your tropical garden the Ginger Lily (Hedychium) is a perfect choice. As a tropical evergreen or herbaceous perennial it grows to eight feet or more with canna-like foliage and flowers of yellow, buff or white in dense spikes. The Ginger Lily prefers ample moisture, light shade, but full sun along the coast, and humus-rich soil. The Shell Ginger (Alpinia nutans) also gives off a pleasing spicy fragrance and has an orchid-like flower, blooming in mottled yellow and pink surrounded by tall, speared leaves. Cannas are another flowering plant very suitable for tropical settings. Aralias, also called Fatia, japonica, make lush, bold tropical plantings, growing from eight to fifteen feet with large, glossy green leaves, sometimes 16 inches wide. White flowers appear in December followed by shiny black fruits. Plant Aralias in the sun only in the fog belt. In the warmer areas plant in areas that are protected from mid-day sun. Arallas will grow in almost any type of soil. BREADED CUBED STEAKS An interesting variation for preparing cubed beef steaks is breaded cubed beef steaks. For 1 pound cubed steaks, use 1 egg, well beaten. Dip steaks in egg, then in seasoned cracker meal. Add coated cubed steaks to frying-pan that contains 3 tablespoons melted lard. Brown on both sides, cover and cook slowly for 20 to 30 minutes or until done. A Federal Department of Agriculture release indicates that it will purchase some fresh California plums.
