Summer Care of Lawns
Mid-summer brings hot weather to most parts of California and hot weather means trouble for grass lawns. Mid-summer's heat, however, is not the only cause of lawn-trouble, says the California Association of Nurserymen, for the dry, brown spots and general unhealthy condition of your lawn can be caused by moth moth, packed soil, fertilizer burn and even by poor watering methods.
Lawn moth and its larvae destroy lawns by feeding on them. You can determine if this insect causes your particular trouble by applying a solution made up of tablespoons of pyrethrum in a gallon of water to two square yards of your lawn, making sure this test area includes both green and brown areas. If moths are present, this solution will bring them to the surface. You may even kill the moth and its larvae with lead arsenate, chlordane or dredin sprays, each of which will effective for a month or more with each application. Lead arsenate is mildly toxic and should be used carefully, especially if persons susceptible to lead poisoning are likely to be near the lawn.
Packed soil is a common cause of unhealthy and unattractive lawns especially in areas where cob and clay soils predominate. General browning-out and lackster appearance is a good indication that the soil beneath your yard is packed and thus impeneable. Packed soil can be corrected by applications of a commercial liquid soil-conditioner which assens the packed soil or by a commercial dry chemical corrector. The latter must be thoroughly worked into the soil with clippings to fall onto the lawn. These clippings dry and decompose, forming a moisture holding barrier against the sun. If you have not followed this procedure before, you may accomplish the same purpose quickly by spreading a layer of peat moss over your lawn and watering it down.
Lawns also need feeding every three or four months with a good fertilizer. If you are not now following a feeding schedule, consult your nurseryman and select a fertilizer. To avoid fertilizer burn, be careful to follow the directions on the package. Never fertilize wet grass for this is likely to cause burn even when the correct amounts are used. Apply the fertilizer when the grass is dry and water heavily immediately afterward. Should you happen to over-fertilize and the lawn begins to burn, soak the area thoroughly to flood out the excess fertilizer.
Form good watering habits and your lawn will look all the better for it. By watering thoroughly but less frequently you will encourage the grass roots to go deep and thus draw nourishment from a greater depth. Always water more frequently during hot spells. Early morning watering normally gives the best results.

The latter must be thoroughly worked into the soil with rake followed by a thorough watering. Hand spiking instruments are also effective for breaking up hard soil and for deep-watering; however, the dry chemical method is perhaps easier and generally more satisfactory.
Year-round efforts to build healthy sod should be intensified during the summer. During hot season, cut your lawn at least once a week, allowing the soil to absorb moisture.
