Market Basket to Celebrate "Penny Day" Here Nov. 8 The lowly penny which has lately lost much of its prestige even among the small fry, will come back into its own on Thursday, Nov. 8, according to an announcement from Neal D. Ramsey, president of Market Basket. That day has been designated as "Penny Day" by the National Association of Food Chains, of which Market Basket is a member. On "Penny Day", the 37 stores of Market Basket will join thousands of other chain supermarkets and food stores throughout the country in telling the story of how food chains feed the millions of customers they serve on a net profit averaging about a penny on the sales dollar, Mr. Ramsey said. The special event is a follow-up on the recent 23rd annual meeting of the National Association of Food Chains which had as its theme, "Feeding Millions For A Penny." It is being carried out as a part of a celebration during November sponsored by the food chain association of the fortyth anniversary of self-service. It is designed to highlight the dramatic changes in nutrition, quality, convenience and availability of foods that have taken place since a man named Clarence Saunders opened the first self-service food store in Memphis, Tenn., in 1916.
