There are a great many philodendron types and with few exceptions, all grow in a trailing or climbing manner. The leaves of the philodendron are leathery and lobed in many shades of green (sometimes mottled or various shapes.) Flowers appear only on mature plants; they resemble callas and are usually in inconspicuous greenish white. Leaf and stalk size on an indoor plant will be directly influenced by the size of the container you use. The more root space the plant has, the larger the leaves and stalks. Philodendrons thrive in even temperatures and are best at 60 degrees. Full northern light or indirect sunlight is all the light this plant needs. Variegated types require more light than plain ones. Provide a well-drained soil and keep moist, watering only when the surface is dry. After your plant is established, feed it every four weeks with a liquid or instantly soluble dry fertilizer recommended for house plants. These cultural instructions apply, also if you plant your philodendrons outdoors. However, your greatest concern in outdoor culture will lie in maintaining an even temperature.
