MOTTELL'S AND PEEK CHAPEL IN
THE WILDWOOD is an intriguing new
concept of architecture — a quaint blending
of Colonial design with the latest of contemporary features. The simplicity of the
early New England church is enhanced with
many Old World furnishings. Through
vista-view windows one sees the beauty and
color of our California gardens with exotic
tropical plantings. Rugs and tapestries from
Lebanon and the Holy Land — art treasures
from Asia, Europe and the Orient — all
combine to delight and fascinate the visitor.

Site of the Colonial Funeral Home and the Chapel in the Wildwood is the former estate of the late C. C. McWhinney. This three-acre estate has been a prominent Orange County landmark for some 20 years. Completely surrounded by giant Eucalyptus trees, its grounds are studded with more than 200 other trees of many varieties, including Sycamore, Elm, Maple, Locust, Magnolia, Oak and Birch. The stately colonial mansion was converted into a funeral home and opened Jan. 1, 1955. The Chapel in the Wildwood is the latest addition.
The chapel, built at a cost of approximately $125,000, seating 200 persons, is being made available for weddings, without charge, and features a large floor-to-ceiling stained glass window, "The Ten Commandments", made by Judson Studios of Pasadena, internationally famed in this field.
Beautiful matched candelabra from France adorn the stone-flanked altar. Overhead four ornate lamps, each from an old church in Europe, vie with an are part of the chapel.

Art objects, rugs, pictures, tapestries, books and other furnishings brought by Peeks from many lands, are to be found throughout the funeral home. Rugs were brought from Beirut, Lebanon, Damascus, and in other places in the Holy Land, Chalice cups, old Bibles and altar lamps were secured in Athens, Rome, London, Edinburgh, Belfast and Dublin.
There are sheath Bibles from Calcutta and Bombay, and from Manila and Corregidor came intricate tapestries.
Pictures collected depict special customs and scenes typical of the countries from which they came. There is a special display of Madonnas, each acquired in a different country. The collection even includes an ancient Admiral Fitzroy barometer, acquired at Stratford-on-Avon, next door to Shakespeare's home.
Edward C. Purnell, a vice president of Mottell's and Peek, is resident manager of the Colonial Funeral Home. Assisting him is his wife, Elsie.
