B3 - Anaheim Gazette Ansheim, Calif., Thurs., July 12, 1956 A Formal Look For Your Garden Decided about those beds of asters yet? Here's a tip: Asters are at their best when treated rather formally. That means small flower beds for the dwarf types and large beds for the tall, stately varieties. Another lovely effect can be achieved by shaping the asters into borders around the home. Aster seeds can be sown in the open ground or can be started in flats. Sow the seeds thinly, cover with fine soil and press down lightly. When sown in flats to hurry germination, top the flat with a sheet of glass covered with a layer of newspaper several pages thick. The seedlings will break through in 7 to 10 days. Water only when the soil looks dry. When the seedlings have acquired 3 pairs of true leaves (in about 3 or 4 weeks), transplant to another seed flat, sowing about 1½ inches apart. In transplanting, lift the seedling out gingerly, letting soil fall away from the roots. Place in a small round hole in the new flat, letting the roots spread freely, and pinch the soil around the stems. Wait 5 to 8 weeks and, presto, the asters are ready for their permanent home in the garden. Plant the dwarf asters about 8 inches apart and the tall varieties 15 to 18 inches apart. And re- ING, lift the seedling out gingerly, letting soil fall away from the roots. And remember, spare that water! For the impatient-for-blooms hobbyist, early flowering aster seeds are the answer. These will blossom in July. The really big months for asters, though, are August and September; one varley, however, is still blooming strongly as late as October. Asters are available in a wide variety of colors. There's a type of aster to suit every floral taste. Cooking Meat Outdoors There’s no need to be tied to the kitchen range in this beautiful weather—now’s the time to cook outdoors! When planning the menu for an outdoor meal, remember that nothing, tastes as wonderful as meat cooked over the open fire. The choice of meats to grill outdoors is wide. There are frankfurters, hamburger patties, ham slices, lamb chops, minute steaks, bacon, and any of the broillable beef steaks. All of these are tender, fast cooking meats. There are some meats, however, that aren’t as suitable for outdoor cooking; they are the less-tender cuts which require long, slow cooking with moist heat. Pork chops and steaks, beef chuck, and round steaks have the best flavor and tenderness when cooked over low heat on the range.
