The promising young stallion Loligfellow, owned by Capt. A. S. Perguson, broke his leg last week and had to be shot. The horse was of great value and promised to exhibit great speed on the race course.

The glorious Fourth was fittingly celebrated at Anaheim Landing. Old Glory was hoisted at daybreak and floated gallantly on the breeze. Teams and wagons gaily decorated containing bevies of fair women and noble men continued to pour in until late in the day. Merry luncheon parties were dotted here and there about the warehouse while mine hosts Hall and Edward with that Prince of Chefs de cuisene, Mr. Cobb, served a sumptuous repast in the dinning room. Among those sojourning there at present are Rev. J. Emery wife of trees on the outer edge of such sidewalks — was adopted. The deed conveying a lot in Vineyard D3, to the town as a site for a drinking fountain was presented to the Board and a committee consisting of Messrs. Miles, Cowan and Fish was appointed to draft a letter conveying the thanks of the Board and citizens generally to Mrs. Sophia Koll and Messrs Hammel & Denker for their donation. Permission was granted to certain citizens on Agusta Street to remove willows which impeded travel. The Board of Equalization will convene on the 19th for the purpose of equalizing the assessment roll.
While President Garfield accompanied by Secretary Blain alighted from his carriage at the Baltimore and Ohio railroad depot in Washington this morning (July 2) two shots were fired at him both taking effect—The first ball entering the Presidents body just above the Kidneys and the second ball striking his shoulder and passing out beneath the shoulder blade. The assassin, a man named Charles Guifteau was arrested. Dr. Bliss regards the President's condition as extremely critical and both the President and Mrs. Garfield have been advised of the probable outcome.
Personnel — Mr. C. Mosseman has gone to San Juan Hot springs where there are about one hundred and fifty campers.

Electric cooking is fastest
Now! Bacon and Eggs
Now! Bacon and Eggs in 3½ minutes when you cook electrically!
TODAY, NOTHING COOKS FASTER than a modern electric range. Bacon and eggs in 3½ minutes. Instant coffee in 60 seconds. Hot soup in 68 seconds. Fry, bake, broil or roast — electricity does it better.
THERE'S MORE: your kitchen is as much as 16° cooler. And cleaner. Pots and pans stay mirror-bright. Kitchen walls look fresh and new twice as long.
SOMEDAY YOU'LL COOK on a modern electric range. It's almost inevitable. But why postpone it? Edison rates are among the lowest in the country. What's more, Edison services your range free as long as you own it. (The only charge is for parts, when needed.)
IF YOU'RE STILL COOKING the old way, it's simply because you haven't seen the new 56 electric ranges at your appliance dealer's.

By State Board
Nine more California counties and 60 cities will join the ranks of the local governments for which the State Board of Equalization is administering sales taxes on July 1, bringing the total number of such governments to 16 counties and 131 cities.
During the April-June quarter, the state board has been administering the sales taxes of Inyo, Los Angeles, Mariposa, Mono, Orange, Sacramento, and San Benito counties and their 71 cities.
In the ensuing quarter, the locally-imposed, sales taxes of Alameda, Mendocino, Merced, Monterey, San Bernardino, San Joaquin, Santa Cruz, Sonoma and Tuolumne counties, together with those of 57 of their cities and of three new cities in Los Angeles and Orange counties, will be state administered.
Approximately 65 percent of the state's taxable retail sales will be subject to these locally-imposed, state-administered taxes during the July-September quarter. The board estimates that it will collect $30,000,000 of local taxes on sales made in this period, $25½ million of which will go to cities and $4½ million to counties.
Local sales taxes in the 16 counties whose sales tax ordinances will be in effect during the next quarter will be collected at a uniform one percent rate, the only rate which counties are authorized to levy. Retailers will remit four percent of their taxable sales to the State Board of Equalization, one per cent of which is the local tax and three percent the state tax.
If the retailer's place of business is within one of the 76 cities in Inyo, Los Angeles, Monterey, or Orange county, or in any one of seven cities in Alameda, San Benito, and San Bernardino counties, all of the one percent local tax will be returned by the state board to the city.
