After many meetings and much prayer, on June 9, 1922, the (Calvary) First Baptist Church was organized. The Sunday meetings were held in the Odd Fellows Hall, a mortician's parlor, a photographer's studio and homes. Prayer meetings were conducted in the old Mexican Mission across from Pressel, Perry and Tull on South Clementine Street. Of the original group of charter members only Mr. and Mrs. R. J. Grange, Mr. and Mrs. John Jenkins and Mr. and Mrs. Mike Simon remain in Anaheim. With the assistance of the Southern California Baptist Convention, the property on the corner of Citron and Broadway was purchased. After much planning, discussion-and prayer, the present church building was constructed while the congregation held its Sunday meetings in a tent. Since that time an educational building was added, and three additional properties were purchased, two of them including residences. During her thirty-three years of existence, the First Baptist Church has been served by eleven pastors. They are Rev. H. B. Foskett, Rev. S. P. Gott, Rev. V. K. Ledbetter, Rev. Earl Edwards, Rev. To Her World: To make unselfish contributions of her leadership, her wealth and her prayers to innumerable missionary and relief enterprises at home and abroad. To Her Master: To strive to make Christ pre-eminent in all phases of her efforts and assigning to Him all glory and honor for victories won. The membership has now grown to over 650 persons, with a Sunday Church school with an average of over 400 in attendance. Two Sunday morning worship services have been necessary to accommodate the worshipers. Therefore, a new place of worship is vitally needed. The Sanctuary to be constructed is of a basic contemporary design, reminiscent of old English. Red brick will be combined with ample glass, indoor planters and natural wood. To achieve spaciousness, a wall of glass extends from the front to the rear of the sanctuary overlooking a landscaped patio. To maintain a feeling of personalness, the seating capacity in the nave will be limited to 550 while the glassed-in narthex can be used for overflow.
