Preparation For Rose Gardens
These late fall days mean two things to the rose gardener, says the California Association of Nurserymen. First, it's time to clean out rose beds, tidy up around shrubs that have finished their blooming and prepare them for winter with a mulch if you live in a cold winter area. Secondly, if there's still some promise of warm weather, set out some rose plants in containers.
Taking up the first point, there are several reasons for a late tidying-up of rose gardens in preparation for the usual mid-winter or early spring planting next year. Dead leaves, twigs and faded blooms are all attractions for rust and mildew spores—get rid of them and you get rid of potential danger, in addition to maintaining a tidier looking garden.
If you should choose to set in some container-grown rose plants now, make sure that the soil around the roots is damp so that the roots will not be exposed and then set the shrub, root ball and all, into the planting hole at the same depth it was planted in the container. Continue to feed water.

Private Liles entered the Women's Army Corps in October 1954. While a civilian, she attended Northwestern State College, Natchitoches, La., and worked for the American Red Cross in Holly Springs, Miss.

Continue to feed water during the rose's growing season, tapering off, of course, as the plant goes into dormancy.
