A small mountain of pulp at one of the big mills in the Las St. John region of Quebec Province is waiting to be transformed into newsprint for some Sunday supplement. WITH record consumption of newsprint by newspapers in the United States which recently resulted in a scarcity, Canada, which supplies half of the entire world's newsprint requirements, is striving hard to meet ever-increasing demands for the life blood of the printed word. American newspaper publishers pay about $780,000,000 for their paper supplies and Canada furnishes nearly 80 percent of the U.S. demand. In addition, demand for Canadian newsprint from European countries is increasing and Canada is being called on to supply more newsprint to Australia, New Zealand, Central America, the West Indies and South Africa. More than half a million people are expected to attend the Donidican Republic's International Fair, commemorating 25 years of propriety under General Rafael L. Trujillo. The fair will open late in the year and extend well into 1956. More than 28 nations of the Free World are represented, including an Atoms-for-Peace exhibit by the United States. Cultural and industrial exhibits will dot the beautiful shore of the Caribbean and about 125 acres of ground will be used to display newest architecture of more than 70 buildings erected for the purpose. NEW ROSE VARIETIES Undisputed queen of the flower kingdom is the rose. Its form, fragrance and many colors make it the flower preferred over all others by most gardeners and nogardeners alike. Top on the list of new roses is the All America selection given to one rose only this year—Circus—a floribunda of many changing colors from red, to yellow, orange, apricot, gold and pink and often back to red. Another new rose of 1956 is Love Song which is pink with a yellow base. Also pink and new is the everblooming climber Mona Lisa. Its fragrant flowers are large and salmon-pink in color. The shrub itself is a small pillar type climber. The 1955 selections are especially outstanding because in them a new rose was introduced—the Grandiflora: And the awardning grandiflora was Queen Lorebeth, a light silvery pink, bining the important characties of the hybrid tea and the ibunda roses. Roundelay, an grandiflora, was also introlast year. It blooms red. On the new grandifloras of the Monterzuma which is a stuscarist-orange.
