LAW IN ACTION SPEEDIER JUSTICE Everyone gains if he can justly shorten a trial or settle a law suit out of court. Such settlements ease the case loads of our courts and save money for the parties and the taxpayer. When the parties can settle a controversy fairly, his "Canon of Ethics" says the lawyer should tell his client to avoid the law suit or end it. Besides, Californias law has sought speedy justice in other ways: 1. California's Chief Justice, as head of the Judicial Council, may send judges from one county to others to help them catch up with heavy case loads. 2. Lawyers on each side get together to stipulate to certain facts which otherwise would need time-consuming proof, weeks or perhaps months. 3. Today the Judicial Council encourages lawyers to make wide use of stipulations in "pre-trial conferences." After both lawyers in a civil case have done their best outside of court, the judge may meet with them to have them agree on further legal and factual questions. Only the left-over questions go before the court or jury. Before the trial, the judge sets down in a court order all the things the two sides agree on. The Judicial Council is still working out pretrial rules under a new law in effect since last September. News: The State Bar of California offers this column for you to know more about our laws. "It is then necessary to give the proper arm or turn light signal before changing lanes. This signal should be given for a considerable distance to allow other drivers ample time to cope with the lane change and avoid accident trouble. Jan. 12, 1956 CARVING MEAT CUTS Blade Pot-Roast The blade pot-roast contains at least part of one rib and a portion of the blade bone. The low-g cooking process softens the tissues attached to the bones; therefore, the bone can be slipped out easily before the pot-roast is placed on the table. Hold the pot-roast firmly with the fork inserted at the left and separate a section by running the knife between two muscles, then close to the bone, if the bone has no beer removed. Turn the section just separated so that the grain of the meat is parallel with the platter. This enables you to cut the slices across the grain of the meat. Hold the piece with the fork, cut slices of one-fourth to three-eighths of an inch thick. Separate the remaining sections of the pot-roast; note the direction of the meat fibers and curve across the grain. Serve two to three slices to each person depending upon the size.
