Jan. 6, 1958 General Motors Has Record Year General Motors produced an estimated 4,040,799 passenger cars and trucks in the United States and Canada during 1955, by far the greatest number of units produced in any one year in the history of the company, Harlow H. Curtice, President, announced today. The previous high production year in General Motors was 1950 when 3,818,333 passenger cars and trucks were turned out in the U.S. and Canada. The output of each passenger car and truck production in the United States, during the month of December, reached a new all-time high for that month. Gas Company Sees Record Expansion In line with continuing growth in this area, Southern Counties Gas Co. today reported it expects to add a record 23,000 new meters in Orange County in 1956 and has budgeted a whopping $6,012,916 for the year to serve its loctl cus-customers. Number of new meter connections scheduled this year is up 4,000 over the 24,000 new meters which the company expected to add here in 1955. The budget for Orange County is by far the largest for any for any of the gas company's eight operating divisions, according to Division Manager Justin M. Kennedy, and represents nearly a third of the company's eeneire entire 1956 budget of $19,645,000. Largest item in the Orange County Division budget, $5,142,600, is for connecting and servicing new customers, Kennedy added. Another major item is $715,429 for replacement of mains and services, relocations of facilities, and distribution system reinforcements. Over-all the company's 1956 budget and number of meters it expects to connect during the year represent new records. The $19,645,000 budgeted for the year is 22 per cent greater than the previous record $18,000,000 (set aside for plant budget in 1955), while the total of 68,000 new meters scheduled for connection this year is 28 per cent greater than the 53,000 new meter connections of 1955.
