ANYWAY, after our Christmas dinner, the tropic night socked in with its customary fearful suddenness, and there we were. We smeared a black and sticky amalgam of stuff (which was at once a camouflage and insect repellent) on all exposed skin surfaces to ward off both the malaria mosquito and the Jap, and sat back to await, with rifles cradled, the far-off dawn. We had sat that way for about an hour when Kimball nudged me and whispered: "Look." I peered up over the rim of the fox hole, and saw, through a break in the jungle wall, airplanes circling over Henderson field, down on the beach probably five miles away. Whether this was just one of those innumerable foul-ups in communications and orders, or whether it was just a figment of two malaria-wracked brains, it is hard to tell, even to this day.
