General Motors Dealers Offered Longer Contracts
General Motors automobile dealers today were offered franchise agreements of five-year terms supplanting the traditional one-year contracts.
President Harlow H. Curtice or General Motors read the following statement at the opening of today's session of the Senate Judiciary Anti-trust and Monopoly sub-committee.
"During our discussions here on Friday I made the statement to you and the committee that the relationships between General Motors and the vast majority of its 17,000 dealers are on a very high level. I also said that the contract with our dealers has had long experience and that it has proved to be very satisfactory, agreement both for our dealers and for General Motors. At the same time I advised this committee that if the agreement with our dealers can be improved, we will improve it as we can find ways of improving it, just as we have over a long period of years."
In the past the public has not been particularly concerned with this matter and hence has had little or no information on the subject. Within the last few days, the public has been grossly mis-informed by widespread publicity given to misleading statements made by witnesses including the few complaining dealers who have appeared before this committee.
"Because of the public misunderstanding and the possible damage to General Motors goodwill, which in turn affects its hundreds of thousands of employees, its dealers, its suppliers and its stockholders, I feel impelled to do what I have not considered necessary heretofore — namely, to formalize a continuing long term relationship with our dealers, which for all practical purposes has been in effect in General Motors for many years.
"Accordingly, today, I am sending the following telegram to the General Motors car and truck dealers.
"This is to advise you that the current selling agreements with General Motors which became effective Nov. 1, 1955, will, if agreeable to you, be extended to expire Oct. 31, 1960. This offer would extend the term of the agreement from one year to five years. If accepted, the amendment to accomplish this will be submitted to you by the division with which you have a selling agreement."
"This will mean, in effect, that our dealers now can have a five-year agreement with General Motors. On the other hand, any General Motors dealers can still terminate this five-year agreement at any time on 30 days' notice if he chooses to do so."

Southland Energy Needs Growing
When an additional supply of 177,000,000 cubic feet of natural gas a day—with an energy equivalent of more than three Hoover Dams—becomes merely "a drop in the bucket" you have an idea of the tremendous energy needs of the growing Southland population.
Such is exactly the case following Federal Power Commission approval for delivery of an additional 177,013,000 cubic feet of gas a day to Southern Counties and Southern California gas companies from Texas and Oklahoma producing fields.
The gas will be delivered in stages, with the final 25,000,000 cubic feet due in January, 1959, according to present plans. At that time out-of-state delivery will be more than 890,000,000 cubic feet a day, Justin M. Kennedy, division manager of the gas company, said here today.
"But we are continuing to look for additional supplies to satisfy the long term needs of our consumers here," Kennedy said.
According to present plans, Kennedy reported, the first 50,000,000 cubic feet of gas a day of the just approved additional supply will be taken through the existing California-Texas, "Biggest Inch" pipeline at Blythe through 1958.
By that time—and pending approval by the California Public Utilities Commission—work will have been completed on a 236-mile 30-inch pipeline which the two gas companies will build from Newhall to Topock to take delivery of the gas from El Paso Nat'l.

County Receives Highway Tax Fund
Robert C. Kirkwood, State Controller, today-advised that Orange county's share of the $6,125,221 November apportionment of highway users taxes distributed to counties is $144,134.03.
Of the $26,295,953 in highway users taxes collected in October and apportioned in November, the State Highway Fund for Cities received $2,421,111; the State Highway Fund for Highways $17,749,621, and the counties $6,125,221.
Kirkwood said that the November apportionment represented an increase of $1,166,998 over October, and was $2,904,233 over the apportionment for the same period last year.
Gasoline taxes accounted for $23,242,666, Use (Diesel) Fuel taxes $1,388,378, transfer from the Motor Vehicle Transportation Tax Fund $1,664,644 and Miscellaneous $265 of the total apportionment.
From gross gasoline tax collections of $25,015,434, deductions were made for refunds to non-highway users of $1,573,100, administrative expenses of $56,747, and aviation fuel taxes of $142,921, in arriving at the net amount for distribution.
October refunds were $37,764 under those made in September.

Chevrolet Completes 34th Millionth Car
The Chevrolet Motor Division today announced the completion of its 34 millionth vehicle.
The milestone model was produced at Baltimore, one of the 11 assembly plants operated by the company. Special significance was attached to the event, because for the second time Chevrolet passed three million-auto markers in a single year. The achievement was first registered in 1950.
The company statement reported the 32 millionth Chevrolet was built Jan. 25 of this year, the 33 on June 29 and the 34 millionth vehicle on Dec. 2. Domestic Canadian passenger cars trucks are included in the total.
"Production figures reveal unusual situation that probably will never be matched by a manufacturer in the heavy goods dustry," the announcement pointed out. "This is that the elapse time of five months and four or between No. 32 and 33 million exactly the same as between No. 33 and 34."
A ceremony signalling the millionth vehicle featured a luncheon attended by top city state officials and Baltimore local officials.
