Pure Gold Sales Show Increase "Sales of fresh fruits by Pure Gold, formerly Mutual Orange Distributors, exceeded $15 million f.o.b. packing-house in 1954-55," reported L. R. Handley, manager, Finance Department, Pure Gold, at the golden anniversary meeting of the pioneer citrus marketing cooperative in Redlands. "This is a gain of more than $1 million over the 1953-54 season," he continued. "Sound economical management and an aggressive, alert sales program were chiefly responsible for this achievement," Handley declared. The golden anniversary meeting of Pure Gold was held in the Redlands Masonic Temple, with President Glenn A. Harris presiding over the business session, which followed the serving of the traditional turkey dinner to more than 175 growers, packing-house managers, special guests, and Pure Gold staff members. Explains Name Change General Manager Robbins Russell outlined the reasons for the change in the corporate name of the association from Mutual Orange Distributors to Pure Gold. "The change in name was dictated by the tremendous gains we have made in lemon and grapefruit tonnage in recent years," he explained. "It has been obvious for some time that our former name, Mutual Orange Distributors, was too restrictive and no longer adequately describes the broad scope of our marketing activities. "Not only does this change to Pure Gold identify our association with its world-famous trademark, but also it recognizes the importance of lemons, grapefruit, and other fruits in our present and future marketing operations," he declared. (EDITORIAL) If you're holding Savings Bonds you bought in 1945, read this important news How you can get an 80% return on your investment Did you know that your U.S. Savings Bonds will go on earning money for you—even after they've reached their maturity date? Did you know that you can get back as much as $1.80 for on your investment Do you know that your U.S. Savings Bonds will go on earning money for you—even after they've reached their maturity date? Did you know that you can get back as much as $1.80 for each dollar you invested in those Bonds—just by holding on to them? Under the present Bond law the maturity period of Series E Savings Bonds has been extended a full 10 years. There's nothing to sign—no visit to the bank required. You just hold on to your Bonds and let them go right on earning extra money for you. With this extended interest period, your Bonds can now earn up to 80% more than you originally paid. For example, if you invested $37.50 in a Bond in 1945, it's worth $50.00 today. But if you hold it for 10 years more, it will be worth $67.34—giving you a net return of $29.84. It's easy to see why 3 out of 4 Bond owners are keeping their matured Bonds—and why so many Americans are investing in more through the Payroll Savings Plan. This is the plan that does your saving for you. You just sign up at the pay office where you work and tell the people there what you want to save each payday. They'll put that amount aside for you—before you get your check. When enough accumulates, they'll buy a Bond in your name and turn it over to you. For your future—and the future of America—hold on to the maturing Bonds you have. And invest in more through the convenient Payroll Savings Plan. Want your interest paid as current income? Invest in 3% Series H. United States Government Series H Bonds are new current income Bonds in denominations of $500 to $10,000. Redemption at pay after 6 months aid on one month's notice. Maturity in 9 years, 8 months and pay an average of 3% per annum if held to maturity. Interest paid semiannually by Treasury check. Series H may be purchased through any bank Annual limit: $20,000. LAW IN ACTION LIABILITY FOR SUPPORT Time war, a person could skip across a state line and evade his lawful duty to support a dependent. But now it is not so easy. Already all states but Nevada have passed the Uniform Reciprocal Enforcement of Support Act. It sets out how a child, a wife or a needy husband or parent may get an out-of-state court to enforce this duty. Since the district attorney can act where a dependent may become a public charge, this law has eased the burden on the public purse. These enforcement laws had no sooner passed than each state found that other states had different support laws which slowed down their enforcement. So the Commission on Uniform Laws drew up a second model law—the Note: The State Bar of California offers this column for you to know more about our laws. Uniform Civil Liability for Support Act—to set up laws for each state to enact to end this "rather chaotic" situation. California's law went into effect last September. This law does not undermine any state law; it says "the rights herem created are in addition to, and not in substitution for any other rights." The new law declares: Each man shall support his wife and his child, and when in need, his parent. Each woman shall support her child; and when in need her husband or parent. Natural or adoptive, the child is any son or daughter under 21, or one of whatever age without sufficient means who is "incapacitated from earning a living." The law calls for the superior court in making its support order to weigh such factors as the parties' living standards, wealth and income, ability to earn, age and duties to support other dependents. He expressed disappointment over the slashing cut made in the Federal Export Payment Program for the coming season, declaring that with the increased production in Spain and other citrus-growing areas of the world, American citrus will have a difficult time finding markets overseas. Milton R. Sage, president of the National Orange Show, San Bernardino, presented President Harris with a scroll commemorating Pure Gold's half century of service and leadership in the California-Arizona citrus industry. He added especial tribute to the progressive innovations which Pure Gold has pioneered and developed, notably the cardboard carton shipping container. "Old Timers" Present A feature of the golden anniversary meeting was the introduction of "old timers" who have been members of the association for more than one-quarter of a century. Alan T. Rains, secretary, United Fresh Fruit and Vegetable association, reviewed plans for next year's Fresh for Health campaign—a program of which Pure Gold was one of the founders. This is the promotional project of the UFFA which has been accomplishso much toward offsetting the inroads of the processed products on fresh fruits and vegetables. Rains' address was illustrated by a number of interesting photos and charts. Throughout his address he stressed the constant need for shipping only the finest quality merchandise. "Consumers today," he said, "have the money to pay for top-quality and when they pay a premium price, they expect to get premium quality. All of us, from the grower level through to the retailer, must emphasize the fact that there is no substitute for quality nor is there any substitute for freshness." The golden anniversary meeting closed with the showing of the Pure Gold film which won such plaudits when shown at the recent International Food Fair in Cologne, Germany. Site of World's Greatest Sports Festival Kwikset Locks, Inc., announced throughout the nation this week that the company is in production on a line of automobile safety seat belts which will be marketed by auto accessories stores. The two styles of Kwikset safety belts will be produced by thehelm manufacturing firm. The Automotive Division of the Anabelts meet Civil Aeronautics Administration strength specifications, and are being made in a variety of colors to harmonize with the interior colors of the new automobiles. The automotive safety belt field is rapidly expanding to meet the requirements for safety devises being widely promoted by automobile manufacturers in an effort to reduce the annual traffic toll of 38,000 deaths and 1,750,000 injuries. The belts help prevent automobile passengers from being thrown from the car or against the steering wheel, dash, seats, or the roof—a major cause of fatalities and injuries on the highways. They also provide comforting support on long drives. The Kwikset belts have a minimum strength of 3000 pounds. They are easily installed in all automobiles, and are quickly adjusted to children or adults. The locking buckles can be released in an instant, encouraging regular use. Here is a change of pace for your Sunday dinner that the family will enjoy. It's stuffed flank steak, suggested by the ASP Service For Homemakers. Recipe serves all. Buy one large or two small flank steaks and have butter-filled potets for stunting. To make spaghetti two cups toasted bread crumbs with hot water, and teaspoon salt and one-eighth teaspoon pepper, a well-beaten egg, table-spoon melted butter or margarine and sliced ripe olives (contents of tall can). Stuff steak and sew opening. Season both sides of steak with salt and pepper and roll in flour. Brown on all sides in small amount of melted fat or salad oil. Add half cup hot water carefully. Cover and bake in slow oven for an hour, or simmer slowly on top of stove if preferred. For dessert, how about a cheese pie? Preheat your oven to 455 degrees. Add cup grated Chuddar cheese to package of pastry milk. Roll out on a slightly rounded board then line a nine-inch pie pan with the pastry, pricking surface with fork. Bake for ten minutes and remove from oven. Reduce oven temperature to 225 degrees. Dredge quarter pound grated Chuddar cheese and quarter pound grated Swiss cheese with flour and distribute cheese evenly over pastry. Beat four eggs. Heat cup milk to scalding point. Add a little of the milk to the eggs and mix with remaining milk. Season with salt and pepper and pour evenly over cheese. Bake for 65 minutes or until a silver knife inserted in center comes out clean. Cut into wedges and serve immediately. Begonia Growers Christmas Party The American Begonia society meeting will be held Thursday, Dec. 8, at 7:30 p.m., at Garden Setting for main events in Australia's 1956 Olympic Games. In foreground is the Melbourne Cricket Ground, venue for major athletic events. The stands are being enlarged to increase total capacity from 85,000 to 110,000. Olympic Park in the background will provide a new sports center of three arenas for swimming, cycling, soccer and hockey. To the right the new Olympic swimming stadium can be seen taking shape. The cricket ground is being enlarged for the day when it gets its new name—the Main Olympic Stadium. Athletes from as many as 70 nations—a record—will compete for honors in Melbourne's 110,000 spectator Stadium during the great Olympic Games, November 22nd to December 8th, 1956. Even more important than the $8,400,000 building program to provide fine content facilities, is the spirited determination of the Australian people to make the first Olympic Games ever to be held in the Southern Hemisphere the best of the modern Olympic era. Warm hospitality will be extended to overseas visitors and special entertainment, an Olympic Arts Festival is being arranged to coincide with the Games. These will be followed by the Challenge Round of the Davis Cup—symbol of world tennis supremacy. Playing back to Australia will not be a new experience for Australians. During World War II one million and a half U.S. servicemen passed through Australia and discovered anew that just about the only difference between Australians and Americans was a span of ocean miles. Mutual regard on the level of individuals, was enhanced in the war years by Mutdal Aid on government levels, in war material and supplies. After the war a balance was struck, and Australia paid in dollars the difference owed to the United States; since then Australia has not sought nor received United States dollar aid. In 1956 the high-principled Olympic Games will find a natural setting in a proud country, where independence and good sportsmanship are the mind of the people. AT EDUCATION CONFERENCE Mrs. Foster M. Warwick, 10732 HOW TO PACK HOLIDAY SHIPMENTS 1. Use sound, sturdy container large enough to provide 2" clearance all around. 2. Use newspaper to prepare cushioning: Do not ball or roll, instead tear into 2" strips and then fluff. 3. Insert 2" bottom layer, then gift. Stuff 2" on sides and top — firm — but not too tight. 4. For several gifts, use big enough box to also provide sufficient cushioning between each one. 5. Double pack very fragile gifts—pack as in 3, in smaller box, then pack box same way in second container. NOTE: As precaution, before closing, enclose extra "To" and "From" address label. Free labels available from Railway Express. For the Christmas shopper who is planning to send gifts to friends and relatives, careful packing is but one step in preparing holiday shipments for safe and sure arrival. After gifts are properly packed, the package or carton must be securely closed or held together. As shown here, taping or tying, or both can be used. Gummed tape, however, is preferable for shipments going by express. Sealed express packages do not involve extra charges or require opening for inspection. The tape, sufficiently wide, can be moistened with a damp sponge. Gummed tape, however, is preferable for shipments going by express. Sealed express packages do not involve extra charges or require opening for inspection. The tape, sufficiently wide, can be moistened with a damp sponge, cloth or paper napkin. Soaking will impair the adhesive quality of the tape. If a little vinegar is mixed with the water the tape will stick more securely. Cartons containing holiday gifts can be shipped very safely if strong twine and proper tying methods are used. First, make a knot at the end of the cord. Then loop the cord around the girth, or outer side of the package, make a slip knot and pull tight (Fig. 5). Make a simple knot around the slip knot to keep the twine taut and secure (Fig. 6). Next, run the twine around the length of the package (Fig. 7) and when passing the cross-wise loop at the bottom make a knot (Fig. 8). Bring cord back to the original slip knot, tie securely with a double knot (Fig. 9) and—for additional safety repeat the process so that the package will be double tied. While these procedures will work in most instances, special sizes or shapes of types of gifts may require additional or slightly different methods. If in doubt or in need of special advice the local railway express office is a good place to call or visit to get help.
