Anaheim Gazette MONDAY, NOVEMBER 24, 1955 CONCERT SET FOR ANAHEIM Anaheim will be the locale for the Orange County Philharmonic Society's next concert, which will be on Saturday evening, December 3rd, at 8:30 p.m. in the Anaheim High School Auditorium, it was announced by Miss Martha Mettler Orange County Philharmonic Chairman for Anaheim. "The Society has a definite policy of trying to divide the playing fairly between the northern and southern parts of the county," stated Miss Mettler. "The beach area was served with the August concert at the Irvine Bowl, the central area of the county with the recent one in Santa Ana, and it is now northern Orange county's turn. There were two northern area concerts last season, but both of those were in Fullerton. This will be the first time that the group will have played in Anaheim." The Brahms Fourth Symphony and Rimsky Korsakov's Scheherazade Suite will be the numbers featured this time by Frieda Belinfante, the Society's permanent conductor, and the Society's professional orchestra. Pork Loin Wins Holiday Vote BAKLAVA Pastry 2 cups sifted flour ½ cup shortening 1 teaspoon salt 1 egg and water to make ½ cup Filling 2 cups slivered almonds ½ cup brown sugar, firmly packed, or honey 1 cup melted butter or margarine 1 teaspoon cinnamon ½ teaspoon nutmeg Sirup 1 cup water 1 cup sugar Grated rind of 1 orange Grated rind of 1 lemon To make the pastry: Cut shortening into flour and salt until mixture looks like cornmeal. With a fork, blend the egg and water. Add to dry ingredients, mixing until thoroughly dampened. Turn onto waxed paper. Knead 8 times. Roll into ball and let stand ½ hour. To make filling: mix together all ingredients for filling. To combine Baklava: Divide pastry into four portions Roll out 1 portion very thin on a lightly floured pastry cloth, into a rectangle 8x16 inches. Cut rectangle in half to form two 8-inch squares. Place 1 square in bottom of 8x8x2-in. baking pan. Spread 2 tablespoons of filling over this pastry. Place second layer of pastry on top of filling. Roll out another portion of pastry as above. Continue making layers of pastry and filling, having top layer of pastry. To make sirup: Mix ingredients Late autumn or early winter weather, pork loin roast sets the mood for a favorite meal during the Thanksgiving holidays. Colorful sprigs of parsley and lemon slices act to set off the roast while the spicy candied sweet-potatoes permit a perfect accompaniment. Pork loin is roasted in a slow oven (350° F.) until golden brown on the outside, well done inside. CHEREY COBBLER 1 pkg. cup cake mix 1 pkg. cup cake mix 1 egg ¼ cup milk ½ teaspoon vanilla 2½ to 3 cups (or large can) red sour pitted cherries 1 cup sugar Pour cherries and juice into skillet. Add sugar; cover and bring to boil. Empty contents of package into bowl; add egg, milk and vanilla, blend. Beat 2 minutes. Drop by tablesoonfuls into gently boiling cherry mixture. Cover and simmer 20 minutes. Makes 8 to 8 servings.
