JOAN S. WHITE, whose news stories about Anaheim social, church and club activities appear regularly in the Gazette, gave the Anaheim White Temple church some hefty publicity this month when she managed to land an illustrated article in Town Journal (formerly Pathfinder). The article deals with "Operation Fruitcake", a project of young people of the church. The youngsters, working evenings after school, using assembly-line techniques in the church's kitchen, are turning out fruit cakes right and left, with a goal of 1500 of the delicacies by Christmas. Streamlined methods, plus a financial assist from their parents who buy the ingredients for them at wholesale when possible, and the help of a local commercial baker who loaned them a large mixing bowl—all add up to success in this unique operation. Selling the cakes at $1 each, they are able to turn a profit of $.70 on each one. They will realize a profit of $1050 on the 1500 cakes, the money to be used for their attempt to entertain the whole of Southern California. So, the debate rages. One thing is for certain. Connell Halnes was pretty well disgruntled when she wasn't greeted upon arrival here to sing for the break fast, and when she had to attend directions at a local restaurant on how to get to the park. She almost turned around and headed right back to Smogburg. A LOCAL department store gets good publicity by placing a automobile in its show window. That shows you how cruel the world really is. I did the same thing once in Cedar Rapids and got fined. A FEW WEEKS ago it was announced by the State Department. Brard J. Schaaf Passes On Monday Bernard J. We have talked to several sources who seem to be "in the know" regarding the in-fighting. At least all of them are careful to request that they be not quoted. It seems that certain of the more influential manufacturing concerns in the Anaheim industrial community, tapped heavily for cash and the services of personnel each Hallowe'en, are getting fed up. Put it this way: you are managing a branch plant of some huge manufacturing concern with headquarters maybe two thousand miles from Anaheim and governed by a board of directors who are out of touch with things on the Anaheim scene. You are forced to chip in, say, $1000 as your part in the local festival. Your request for authority to set aside this sum locally might be received coldly by the brass 'way off at headquarters. The dissenters say that some substitute should be devised in place of the festival and parade as it is now known. However, they are not clear as to just what that substitute would be. Whether his sentiment is representative I do not know, but one businessman said last week that the entire Hallowe'en celebration should be angled more toward the idea of a purely local celebration rather than what he called Brnard J.
