Tapp, chair-man of the board of directors of Bank of America. For the first time in the program's eight-year history, cash awards will go not only to 124 finalists but also to 248 second and third-place winners in 31 zonal competitions. These new prizes will be $50 and $25, respectively, in each of four fields: science and mathematics, fine arts, liberal arts, and vocational arts. The additional awards are $9,300, bringing the total cash prizes to $44,900. Prizes Assured First-place winners at the zone level are assured automatically of minimum $100 prizes, plus an opportunity to compete next May in one of four regional finals, two in Southern California and two in Northern California. Top awards of $1000, $500, and $250 in each of the four fields are made at all four of the finals. "This year we expect participation by approximately 550 high schools having more than 125,000 seniors on their rolls," Tapp said. "In addition to the 372 cash awards there will be more than 5000 trophy cups, certificates and ribbons."
