THE POLITICIANS hardly let the ink dry on the first official communique regarding President Eisenhower's illness before they (both parties) launched a ghoulish search for a likely successor to the White House. Political vultures wheeling of a towering national and world leader! Friend Nixon, do thee let thy hand be guided aright! WE MAY AS well face the facts, however. The Democrats can scarcely conceal their sudden rise in hopes. We understand that they are so encouraged that a few of them, who took to the hills after the 1952 clap of doom, are again making an appearance. One of them was even bold enough to creep out of the brush and ask a group of Irvine Park picnickers Sunday for the remains of an old liverwurst sandwich. AH! HOW WONDERFUL is this fall weather! Mellow, hazy Indian summer, warmish, lazy days, bracing, clear, moonlight-list of 6000. R-r-r-r-ough! THIS WEEK, Oct. 2 to 9, is being observed in the United States as National Newspaper Week, an annual period when members of the working press and citizens pause to consider the very great impact (all too often taken for granted) of the daily printed word on the nation as a whole. Whether we care to admit it or not, newspapers profoundly affect our way of thinking, and as we think, we generally act. Not only do the platitudinous editorials mold public opinion. The screaming headlines on the newsstands; the way a story is "played up" or "played down" by the editors, all have their subtle effect. Look in at any city restaurant at the breakfast rush hour from A TRADE-IN THE NEW MODELS ARRIVE! AC 2-dr. Sedan ... 154500 R&H, Hydra. 'Hard Top' ... 204500 Like new. 'Bel-Air' 4-dr. ... 119500 R&H. One of them was even bold enough to creep out of the brush and ask a group of Irvine Park picnickers Sunday for the remains of an old liverwurst sandwich. ✓ AH! HOW WONDERFUL is this fall weather! Mellow, hazy Indian summer, warmish, lazy days, bracing, clear, moonlight-flooded nights. The other night I stepped out into the back yard to be stopped in my tracks by the breath-taking beauty of the moonlight bathing everything with what seemed to be molten silver. An orange tree, generally dusty and commonplace by day, now was magically transformed into an exotic plant of exquisite shimmering platinum. At first I thought that the moonlight was actually dripping from the tree. But it was only water. The old lady had forgot to turn off a lawn sprinkler. ✓ BUT SERIOUSLY, there IS a zest in the air, and a real joy in living at this time of the year. Football in the air... the incomparable World Series classic... an urge to get out and rake the lawn. Don't you just get a hankering to get out with some old rake? ✓ THE RUSSIANS, despite their new policy of friendliness toward us at the high diplomatic level, still tell their people at home that things are going to the devil in America. Perhaps they are right. Conditions ARE getting tough here. In 1944, for example, when we went to the grocery store, we had 3500 different food items to choose from. In 1955, we can choose from a WALL TO WALL CARPET SALE! COTTON $373 yd. RUGGED $563 yd. BOUCLE VISCOSE ANAHEIM FURNITURE CO. 146 N. Not only plattitudinous editorials public opinion. The screamlines on the newsstands; a story is "played up" and down" by the editors, their subtle effect. On at any city restaurant breakfast rush hour from 7 to 8 a.m. on any work day and you will see newspaper readers gulping down strong black headlines with their coffee. No medium mirrors a community as does its newspaper, and no historian could more faithfully record its history. And the so-called "hick" country weekly with its four pages and a miserable circulation of no more than 750 copies, is every bit as important to its own town or village as is the mighty metropolitan sheet of 84 pages and 750,000 circulation to its city. One would have to be almost totally devoid of imagination to stand near a mighty newspaper press grinding out 60,000 copies an hour and not hear — in the rumble and roar — the great voice of America and the voice of the Free Press. EX-PRESIDENT Harry Truman's memoirs running currently in LIFE Magazine, make for interesting reading. One picture in there of him as a young man sheds light on why he was so readily admitted to the Inner Circle of New Deal High Kleagles. The picture shows him as the boss of the Jackson Co. (Mo.) Depart-ment of Welfare, and he is sitting at a desk using a gadget that writes five checks at once! WHILE SCANNING the newspaper Monday, I was interested in this little item: WASHINGTON, Oct. 3 (AP) — The federal government added a net of 482 employees during August for the seventh consecutive monthly increase in its civilian employment, Sen. Byrd, Democrat of Virginia, announced today. Memory is a little hazy, but it seems to me that the campaign promises of 1952 included something of a different sort. SOME ARMCHAIR baseball experts figured that Manager Casey Stengel of the Yankees pulled Pitcher Craig out of the game Sunday because the Dodgers were getting too many hits. This was not the reason. Actually, Craig was benched because it was learned that he had shaved Sunday morning with a Gem razor. It's a waste of ammunition unless you have a good aim in life.
