October 1880
The Riverside Press announces that the New York Company which has been for the past year negotiating for the purchase of the Temescal tin mines has failed but that another New York syndicate has the matter of purchase under consideration.
Sylvester Ardage had a trial in Justice Bailey's court yesterday afternoon on a charge of stealing a bridle from N. H. Mitchells a month ago. He was captured in Wilmington a few days ago by officer Dick Barham.
One of Chas. Hille's monkeys gave birth to a young one last week. Remembering the mishap of a year ago (when after a similar event the father and mother ate their offspring) Mr. Hille removed the youngster and constituted himself a wet nurse for the occasion.
The Horticultural Fair which has been in progress during the week in the Pavilion, has been well patronized. Florence, Los Nietos, Pasadena, Orange, Westminster, San Diego and Santa Barbara have all had good exhibits as well as Los Angeles city. Anaheim has d fine display of wines. Theo Reiser, sherry wine of 1878 vintage, Dreyfus & Co., Port wine, J. E. Pleasants, honey; R. Larter of Westminster had a pumpkin Kansas, were guests on Tuesday of Mr. and Mrs. Rae.
Capt. Williams and wife of Pittsburg have arrived in Anaheim after an absence of two years, with the intention of remaining permanently. They are guests of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Shanley.
Prof. Smith and Prof. West will arrive in Anaheim tomorrow and will be guests of Mr. Neff. Prof. Smith is head of the Pathological department of the University of California and Prof. West is recently from Washington and will probably be connected with the proposed state laboratory.
Eddie Boege left on Tuesday for Marin county where he goes to take charge of a lumber yard.
Harrison Kuebler found a $5 gold piece in a tin can placed upon a beam under the residence of the late Mrs. Metz while moving the ancient structure a few days ago to make room for a new brick building. The money had been placed there for safe keeping access being had through the cellar. A crowd of bystanders watched the moving of the building as it was said that at one time the owner kept a large amount of money secreted about the premises. A solitary gold piece was the extent of the find. It was turned over to Napoleon Hart, the present owner of the building.

Mr. J. B. Raine informs us that he realized an excellent yield from his hop fields this year. One field of fifteen acres produced three thousand and ten pounds to the acre giving him a total of 55,159 pounds. Mr. Raine proposes to ship direct to Cincinnati when the Southern Pacific is opened up. By this means he will save money each year that now goes to middlemen.
J. A. Forbes assisted by Deputy District Attorney W. E. Lovette, occupied five days of last week in Santa Ana in taking testimony in regard to the lines of the rancho Santiago de Santa Ana.
Twenty acres of land in Anaheim Extension adjoining town is offered for sale very cheap by L. F. Lewis of the City Stables.

The ceremony of installation of the Rev. F. W. Mitchell, pastor of the First Presbyterian church was held in the church Wednesday evening. Rev. H. C. Schumacher of Santa Ana and Rev. Hopkins of Fullerton propounded the questions and delivered the charge to pastor and people and Rev. J. Stone of Livermore a former pastor of the church offered the installation prayer. After the service a reception was held.
John Zeigler who has lately acquired possession of the Commercial Hotel in this city, has demonstrated the fact that he is the right man for the place. The hostelry is growing in popular favors

Yesterday the sun appeared for the first time since Sunday. Three and one-half inches of rain fell during the storm, being the heaviest precipitation in years at this time of the year.
A tramp entered the paint shop of L. Nemetz on Saturday morning and in the absence of the proprietor stole a carpenter's saw. He later appeared at the Nemetz home, two blocks distant begging for his breakfast. Mrs. Nemetz kindly furnished him with a meal. The hobo was enjoying the repast when Mr. Nemetz entered and recovered the saw. He asked the hobo how he came in possession of the implement when the latter attempted to equivocate. Nemetz administered the solar plexis and put him out for the count.
Fred Smith of Jonesville, Wis., has taken a position at Bird Beebe's implement emporium. Mr. Smith is accompanied by his family and has rented the Bickford residence on Philadelphia street.
The flesh of the kangaroo is much prized by natives of Queensland, according to the Encyclopaedia Britanica.

Herman Kruger was in town from Los Alamitos on Saturday. He reports the electric road constructed beyond Garden Grove, having a force of 400 men. Price of land in the neighborhood has jumped to $200 per acre.
Mrs. Fred Rimpau entertained the Miercoles club on Wednesday afternoon at progressive euchre. Delicious refreshments were served by the hostess assisted by MissZolla Smythe. Mrs. C. F. Grim won the first prize, Mrs. A. Rimpau the second and Mrs. Kuchel the third.
Dr. Syer attended a social gathering at the home of H. Cahen in Los Angeles, Saturday, given by Edmond Cahen to his fraternity in the Medical college.
