ANAHEIM GAZETTE Anaheim, Calif., Thursday, Aug. 25, 1955. Pretty Little Poppies "Amapola," the pretty little poppy, has been identified with California since the days of early Spanish settlers. If you have a driveway that needs plantings, a hillside that needs cover, or simply an informal garden—there is a poppy for you. For bright color in a rockery or along a slope, try massing the family eschscholtzia californica. California's most famous native is Shade Trees Are Available Now Infinitely varied in type, description and function Shade Trees can perform a multitude of ways in your yard and garden, says the California Association of Nurserymen. Decidious or evergreen fruit-bearing, blossoming, large or small trees of each description will blend well together in your yard and carry on their own special functions without interfering with each other. Most varieties of shade trees can be obtained now in containers at nurseries. Plant your choices in shade trees as you would any container grown plant. Prepare a planting hole deeper and wider than the root ball of the tree. Place the root ball on a mound of soil piled up in the bottom of the hole so that the nursery dirt-ring is slightly above ground level. Fill in with soil and water to get rid of air holes. After planting be sure to watch the leaves of the trees for signs of wilting in the first two or three weeks usually about two feet high, with flowers measuring two or three inches across. In its native habitat, the blooms are yellow-orange, but cultivated horticultural forms vary in color to pink, cream and white. The bush poppy, dendromecon rigida, makes a handsome shrub to plant on banks or hillsides. It is an evergreen that grows from two to eight feet high. All over the bush are canary-yellowish flowers. It thrives best in full sun and germinates well from seed if planted in sandy soil. Most dramatic of all the members of the poppy family is the romneya coulteri or matilija poppy. This exotic shrub grows from three to eight feet in height and boasts huge white flowers, with golden yellow centers. This plant has leaves growing all along the stems, from ground-to-bloom; for this reason it makes an attractive plant on banks. It is effective, too, as a background shrub.
