A Shrub of Many Uses
Pyracantha is Colorful in Both Spring and Fall
Fall color in fall. Masses of white blossoms in spring. Shiny evergreen foliage the year round. Add all this together and it spells Pyracantha, a shrub of rare good use.
A few things have been omitted from the above specifications, and those are thorns—which may or may not be desired. In a hedge, thorns are desirable as are the pyracantha's other features. But in a planting area you must invade to cultivate other things, thorns are hardly an asset.
Most yards have one or several good spots for pyracantha, however. Espaliered against a wall or fence; in an isolated area that needs both greenery and color. In tube for patios and terraces. One variety, Santa Cruz, is dense and low growing and is easily kept to a height of 18 inches as a ground cover.
As to color, you have your choice of bright orange or red, either of which can be put to good use. As a rule, the oranges are at their peak before Thanksgiving and are one of the few shrubs we have in the Bay Area which produce the traditional fall color. The reds are later, reaching their peak around Christmas and adding the traditional red to our gardens at that time.
You need have little fear about cutting the berries for indoor decorations. Pyracanthas bloom on second-year growth and once they have bloomed, they won't bloom on the same wood again. For that reason, pruning is advantageous from three standpoints: Keeping the bush in good shape; providing color for the mantel and kitchening wood where you wish.
Varieties to look for in Llandil, with its big, long-orange berries; Graberl, and lent, large-berryred red; Cruz, the low-growing red variations of pyracantha lilium. Stribling, the tall (15 narrow (2 feet) new seedling).
Culturally you won't have much time to pyracantha except to keep it pruned. Plant plenty of sun and wait for ripe fruit! BUT YOU

Masters are Prolific and Practical
For those who want a magnifient display of blue flowers in the garden and also quantities of pretty blue flowers for cutting, there are two hardy asters certain to please.
One, a low-growing evergreen bush in good shape; providing color for the mantel and keeping blooming wood where you want it. Varieties to look for include: mandil, with its big, long-lasting orange berries; Graberl, an excelent, large-berryed red; Santa Cruz, the low-growing red, and variations of pyracantha koidzu. Stribling, the tall (15 feet) arrow (2 feet) new seedling.
Culturally you won't have much time to pyracantha except to keep it pruned. Plant it in plenty of sun and wait for results.
A shrub, Aster fruticosus, is a native of South Africa that thrives in California. The other, Aster Grikartil, is a perennial that soon grows into a sturdy bush two feet high.
All things considered, both plants are nearly perfect. All they ask is a well-drained soil and a sunny location to prosper year after year. Both spurn pampering, require little water.
Aster fruticosus grows to 3 feet and spreads more than that. It has dense heather-like rich green foliage nearly covered from April to July with masses of deep lavender blue daisy-like flowers about an inch across with yellow centers. The bush grows quickly and should be cut back after flowering each year.
Many consider Aster Grikartil to be the most valuable perennial ever introduced. It will provide a mass of violet-blue single asters 2 inches across continuously from June to December.
The flowers have exceptional keeping qualities when cut and are delightfully fragrant.
In December prune the plant vigorously.
Native Plants Will Thrive in Local Climate
Natives will take the backaches out of gardening, for they eliminate the care required by more tender plants. They thrive in our natural climate, which means they thrive on neglect and conditions of near drought for half the year.
This ability to "take it" is especially desirable for gardeners who have wide open spaces in need of cover—a hillside, for in inches across continuously from June to December.
The flowers have exceptional keeping qualities when cut and are delightfully fragrant.
In December prune the plant vigorously.
Gleanothus gloriosus, one of California's "wild illias," has more common varieties that grow to a natural height of 4 to 24 inches and can be low-growing, dense and spright if the shoots are pinched back.
The native habitat of this nothus is on the coastal strata between Point Reyes and Point na. It's flowers are lavender and grow in large, round clumps.
Fragarita chiloensis, the strawberry, has dark green skin and pure white flesh with yellow centers. The strawberry generally grows height of about 8 inches in native setting.
This glossy-leaved carrot often call the "sand-straw because its rapid spreading ners blind it to California's swept beaches.

bulbs, since they give you more blooms per square inch than the singles. Replant immediately or store in a cool place for replanting next month.
Gladiolus may be lifted about six weeks after they bloom. Cut off tops about an inch above the corm and store in wire-bottomed trays (no more than two corns deep) in a cool place. They may be planted again after Feb. 1.
Don't let up on the watering program with dahlias and don't let faded dahlia blooms stay on the plant. Keep feeding at 3-4 week intervals through October.
Keep shallow-rooted shrubs like camellias, rhododendrons and azaleas moist at the roots. Never let them dry out. Overhead sprinkling is preferred, since they love showerbaths. Don't fertilize these from here on in.
