Fragrant and Fair Is The Freesia A native of South Africa where it grows wild the freesia grows from a corm, bulb-like but actually a fleshy underground stem, and it blooms fragrantly in white and several pastel and warm colors. To enjoy freesia blossoms in the coming months it is now the time to set the corms in the ground they can be planted from now to November but the earlier the better. Planted now they should bloom in approximately three months. To extend the freesia's blooming period stagger your planting, putting in several corms every few weeks. Place your freesia corms about three inches apart and two inches deep in average loam. (Deeper planting will be necesssary in very sandy soil.) Use the short end of the triangular shaped freesia corm as its base and provide for excellent drainage. During the winter months plant the corm in full sun and supply generous amounts of water and food for extra large flowers. It's a good idea to incorporate a good bulb food in the soil before you set in the corms. Divide when the clumps get crowded.
