What a grand and glorious feeling to really relax while on vacation, yet know that important savings goals are getting closer all the time. That's how you'll feel with every U. S. Savings Bond you buy. For Bonds go right on earning money for you—no matter where you are or what you're doing.
Start feeling good today. Join the Payroll Savings Plan where you work. Just tell your pay office how much you want to save each payday. Your company invests this money for you in U. S. Series E Savings Bonds. Then the money you worked so hard for starts working equally hard for you. When held to maturity (9 years and 8 months) each Series E Bond pays an average of 3% per year, compounded semiannually. With the automatic extension privilege, it will go on paying that same fine interest for 10 more years. For example, save just $3.75 a week—in 5 years you'll have $1,025; another 4 years and 8 months—you'll have a total of $2,137.

Good advice: Do today's work well and forget about what tomorrow may bring.
Kickback may sound like a football term, but is more familiar in political circles.
Davy Crockett Cracklin' Corn Pone
Davy Crockett Cracklin' Corn Pone
Want to give your young Davy and his little lady a special thrill?
Make up a batch of this light and crispy corn-bread-bacon delicacy,
and you'll win their hearts two-fold, especially when they know it was
a favorite in the Tennessee home of the original King of the Wild
Frontier.
This modern version is quick and easy to prepare, keeps well and can
be reheated perfectly for second meal servings. Serve them piping hot
with lots of butter or margarine and your own special preserves or
syrup and be sure to make enough, for the whole family will love them.
Davy Crockett Cracklin' Corn Pone
2 cups corn meal 1 egg, beaten
¼ cup sifted all-purpose flour 1 cup sweet or diluted evaporated milk
4½ teaspoons baking powder ¼ cup bacon drippings, melted and cooked
1½ teaspoons salt ½ cup cracklings
2 teaspoons sugar ½ cup cracklings
Sift flour with baking powder, salt, and sugar. Add corn meal and
mix well. Combine egg, milk, and bacon drippings. Add liquids (any
ingredients stirring gently during addition). Stir just until ingredients
are mixed. Fold half of the cracklings into the batter. Shape mixture
into pones on a well-greased cookie sheet. (Pones are cakes about the
shape of a child's hand—about 3½ inches long, 1½ inches wide, and
½ inch thick.) Sprinkle tops of pones with remaining cracklings. Bake
in a hot oven (400°F.) until done, 15 to 18 minutes. Makes about 6 to 10
ponses.
*To make cracklings the easy way, fry small pieces of bacon in a
heavy fry pan over low heat until bacon is crisp and brown. Cut as
needed. Drain on absorbent paper.*
