July 7, 1936 Bougainvillea Vine Adds Rare Beauty To Any Homesite Brilliantly colored, the Bougainvillea vine can transfer a dull wall or insignificant fence to a riot of gay, warm colors—purplish red, deep magenta, cerise, pink, bronze, gold or brick red. An evergreen vine, the Bougainvillea wears ordinary medium green foliage and very plain flowers which are set in the middle of three bracts—until the height of summer when the bracts burst forth in glorious colors. The Bougainvillea on the whole does best in areas where summers are very warm, although there are some varieties that perform well in milder areas. The Bougainvillea spectabilis is a mild area variety, blooming in shades of purple-red and magenta. The hydrid Rosea, bluish-rose in color, also performs well in cool locales. And you can have Bougainvillea in many other shades that are adapted to mild winters and coolish summers. Several days should pass before watering the lawn so that the spray material is not washed away. Two or three applications may be necessary during the summer for effective control," Longfellow said. In addition to insect damage, brown spots may be caused by dog damage, fertilizer burns, water management and fungus diseases.
