Zinnias Fill Garden and House with Beauty Zinnias, natives of Mexico, are a good bet for your summer garden. The plants can tolerate extremely hot weather and still produce a tremendous crop. Though usually grown in full sun, they will prosper in partial shade. It is easy to grow them from seed. You can sow the seed in the open ground as soon as the weather warms up. Purchasing seedlings may save time, but the seed-sowing method is certainly more economical and there is always a special thrill in growing your own flowers. Zinnias have a marked resistance to the more common garden diseases and pests and they make relatively few demands on the care-taker. In fact, a child should be able to produce prize-winning blossoms. You will not have to bring in any special top soil, as they thrive in most types of garden soil. The ground should be thoroughly spaded and adequately fertilized. The plants prefer a deep soil. It is also advisable to apply plant food at intervals of every four or five weeks during the growing season. Zinnias are a dual purpose plant. They perform beautifully outdoors and are also well suited for adding color to the interior of your home. Because they bloom so profusely they will make your living room look like a florist’s shop. The flowers should be cut early in the morning. As soon as they have been cut plunge them deeply into a bucket of water to just be bottomed. Harmony Zinnias low the flowers. Leave them for several hours before arranging in a vase. This treatment allows the flowers to absorb a maximum amount of water. The water in the vases should be changed every day. It is also advisable to cut off about one-half inch of the stem every day; preferably doing this job with the scissors under water. The reason for this is to prevent the formation of air bubbles in the stem, a condition that may result when the stems are cut in the open air. Mrs. Geraldine Hitchcock, a resident of Anaheim for six months, died Saturday evening at 904 Gretchen Way after an extended illness. She is survived by a daughter-in-law, Mrs. David Hitchcock. She was a former resident of Long Beach and a member of the Episcopal Church. The body was in state in Hilgenfeld chapel until Wednesday and funeral services were conducted at St. Michael's Episcopal church today at 11 o'clock with the Rev. John Kimball Saville officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Auburn Cemetery, Cambridge, Mass. Newly ordained priest, Rev. Paul L. Peterson, has replaced Rev. Joseph F. Alker at St Boniface Catholic church. Rev.
