Multi-Purpose Hormone
Harmones are the body's chemical messengers.
They stop and start complex body actions.
Hormones are now made synthetically.
They ease skin inflammations.
By Science Features
One of the most famous medical stories concerns a woman who was crippled with severe rheumatism. Bed-ridden for years and unable to move many parts of her body, she was given injections of a hormone known as cortisone. After the second day she lifted her limbs without pain, the third day she was off the bed and later that week she went downtown to buy some clothes. Because of an amazing hormone, she was "living" again for the first time in that a single injection of hydrocortisone given to rheumatoid arthritis patients produced relief lasting from several days to several weeks. Dr. Leon Goldman of the University of Cincinnati reports that a single injection into the skin can suppress reactions to mosquito bites for months. He found too that hydrocortisone ointment halts the itching of poison ivy in hours and clears up severe cases in days.
Other specialists report that extreme baby rashes acne and

After the second day she lifted her limbs without pain, the third day she was off the bed and later that week she went downtown to buy some clothes. Because of an amazing hormone, she was "living" again for the first time in years.
Further research produced a more useful and potent cortisone-like hormone called hydrocortisone, and the laboratories began exploring ways to manufacture it from raw materials. Now, the hydrocortisone produced by the most advanced process, called Cortril, is available both as a skin ointment, in tablets, and in injection form.
At the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Joseph Hollander found that a single injection of hydrocortisone given to rheumatoid arthritis patients produced relief lasting from several days to several weeks. Dr. Leon Goldman of the University of Cincinnati reports that a single injection into the skin can suppress reactions to mosquito bites for months. He found too that hydrocortisone ointment halts the itching of poison ivy in hours and clears up severe cases in days.
Other specialists report that eczema, baby rashes, acne and severe sunburn can be aided with the ointment.
Medicine's newest approach is to combine this hormonal drug with one of the most powerful antibiotics. Working together against eye and skin ailments, Cortril with terramycin, according to medical reports, has the double action of fighting infection and inflammation at the same time.

(maybe you'd better try Variable Pit
As any automotive engineer will tell you, the goal in automatic transmissions has long been a design that would give top acceleration and top gas mileage—and still be absolutely smooth.
Well, it's easy to step up acceleration, or gas mileage—but tough to do both together—unless a lot of gearshifting takes place, which cuts down on smoothness.
So Buick engineers looked to aviation for the answer—and brother! what a wondrous new magic they came up with!
They took a leaf from today's plane propeller—which switches the pitch of its blades one way for quick take-off—and another way for better gas mileage aloft.
They brought the same principle to Dynaflow Drive*—to the twenty propeller-like blades in the Dynaflow "stator." They engineered these blades to swivel like the blades of the plane propeller—and with the same results.
In cruising, blades are an important part of your car's performance. But when you need burst of safety—a tight spot—a pedal, and you've never because the it before in It's action the backed by the Buick history sales soaring Come in and Buick SPEED ROADMASTER and the year *Dynaflow Drive cost on other Series

Rose Tournament Seeks Public Help
An appeal for the public to join in and help to select a theme for the 67th annual Tournament of Roses Parade to be held in Pasadena on New Year's Day, was recently by Dr. A. L. Gerrie, President of the Tournament of Roses association.
The person who sends in the theme suggestion that is finally selected will become Pasadena's honor guest on New Year's Day with tickets for the parade, the guest luncheon, and for the Rose Bowl, for himself and companion.
It is desirable to suggest a theme which may be adapted by float designers in building all flower entries for the Tournament of Roses Parade. It should be general enough to allow 60 different interpretations.
The theme this past year was "Familiar Sayings in Flowers." In previous years the themes have included "Famous Books," "Melodies," "Poems," "Dreams of the Future," "Romance," Golden Legends," "Fairy Tales," "Holidays," "Childhood Memories," "History," "States and Nations" and many others.
Theme suggestions may be mailed in on postcards or in letters to Tournament of Roses, Theme Contest, 181 South Robles Avenue, Pasadena.
Participants may send in more than one suggestion. If there are several with the same suggestion,

Franchise Tax Board Explains Exemptions
Any Corporation wishing to remain exempt from payment of California Franchise Taxes must under the law passed at the 1953 legislative session file a loyalty declaration prior to March 15, 1955.
Robert C. Kirkwood, chairman of the Franchise Tax Board issued this caution today in order to remind all previously tax-exempt corporations that, under Chapter 1503 adopted by the legislature pursuant to a constitutional amendment approved by the people at the 1952 general election, failure to file the statement constitutes automatic waiver of the right to exemption.
Corporations that do not receive the necessary declaration forms through the mail, are advised to obtain them at one of the branch offices of the Franchise Tax Board or at 1020 N Street, Sacramento 14, Calif.
