BLONG VIEWS (From an Egg-Shaped Head) BY WALDO HUNTER, P.S.B. AN ADVERTISEMENT in Tuesday's L. A. Times, placed by one of the big (but really big) department stores, bore this touching message for your Lady Fair: "Creme a la galee royale by orlane of paris ... The original French formula that contains that mysterious essence that keeps the queen bee vibrantly young forty times longer than her subjects. Just a touch nightly of this amazing cream will help your skin become younger-looking ... only at ___'s, first floor. Tube $10.00 ... Jar $15.00." Go to it, gals, but watch out you don't get stung! I TRIED THE same thing once, an amalgum of gum oil and pulverized rhinoceros horn palmed off onto me by a slack-jawed and slinky charlatan at a carnival side-show in East St. Louis, Ill., for which he accepted $7.50 with well-feigned reluctance. After taking the stuff, I had rheumatism under the left clavicle for nine months running. And nothing much else happened. MEDICINE MAN-Fred Beckham, one of the high potentates California Bank to Open Anaheim Branch in April All-Time Record Set by General Motors A new all-time sales record for the month of December was announced today by General Motors. Harlow H. Curtice, president of General Motors, said total retail passenger car deliveries by five General Motors divisions last month reached 282,701, highest December in the history of the corporation and equal to the highest of any previous month. Retail deliveries of General Motors passenger cars in December brought the 1954 sales total to 2,769,639 units, or 105.3 per cent of 1953, Mr. Curtice said. "Our retail deliveries during the month of December reached an all-time high and were double the rate of deliveries for the month of December last year," Mr. Curtice said. "These sales reflect the uniformly strong public acceptance of our 1955 models. Demand for our product is substantially greater than availability." Controller Sends Money to County To offer the complete services of a large metropolitan banking institution to the ever-growing Anaheim area, the California Bank will on or about April 15 open a branch at Center and Claudina streets, in Anaheim. The old office of Anaheim branch Bank of America will be extensively remodeled on both ground floor and mezzanine, Frank L. King, president of the California Bank, said, to meet business and financial needs of burgeoning Anaheim. Establishment of the Anaheim branch will be one of the first outside of Los Angeles for California Bank. The company has 44 branches in Los Angeles county, and has only recently extended into neighboring Orange county. Among mergers being planned is that of the Oil Fields National Bank of Pomona, as soon as shareholders approve. Kern-Miller Troth Is Announced Mr. and Mrs. Anton Kern of 510 E. Vermont st., have announced the engagement of their daughter, Barbara, and Clifford R. Miller, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ivan Miller of Fullerton. Miss Kern is a graduate of Marywood High school and her flame is a graduate of Fullerton Union MEDICINE MAN Fred Beckham, one of the high potentates of Casey-Beckham Pontiac, who came off the reservation just a few years ago and has been trying to catch on to the white man's way, without much success, since, has just returned from a hunting trip up at Willows loaded with duck. This is the sort of thing the Medicine-man understands much better than selling automobiles. He is as much at home with a shotgun as any white man, but, when a white man comes to the Pontiac garage with a little money in his hand the Medicine-man gets so excited he is liable to give away his automobiles. WELL, WE see by the public prints that General MacArthur is heading out this way to dedicate a monument in his name set up in Los Angeles, the Plaster Athens of the Golden West. And at the same time we get to thinking that Harry Truman (an ex-president of ours) has made great plans to establish for himself a museum down at Independence, Mo., containing his letters. And then, too, Dwight D. Eisenhower (a golfer) has given his official blessing for a great museum to contain his war trophies at Abilene, Kansas. Wonder how loud Abraham Lincoln would have cussed if someone would have suggested he set up a monument for himself while still alive? And yet these high-placed boys like to say: "I take this office with great humility." FROM JANUARY 16 to January 23 is National Printing Week in the United States. And, although I view it through a biased eye, I believe it is of somewhat higher importance than, say, Miss Potato Chip Week, or National Dill Pickle Week. If there be those who would confute my statement that there is anything which has had more profound impact on the progress of mankind than the printed word, Controller Sends Money to County Robert C. Kirkwood, state controller, reported that Orange county has received $113,351.03 as its share of the $5,368,071 in highway users taxes available for apportionment to counties for the month ended Nov. 30, 1954. The $22,613,464 in the highway users tax fund available for apportionment for November was allocated as follows: $5,368,071 to counties; $2,088,756 to state highway fund for cities, and $15,156,637 to state highway fund for expenditure on highways. The sum available for apportionment for November was $778,256 under the previous month. The amount distributed during November was derived from: net gasoline tax, $20,052,057; Use (diesel) fuel tax, $1,152,496; transfer from motor vehicle transportation tax fund, $1,406,303; and miscellaneous, $2881. Anaheim Men Named Ambassadors Of El Bekal Temple Albert Marcoux and Clyde Nickle, both of Anaheim, have been named ambassadors of El Bekal Temple to Orange county, it was announced today by Oakley K. Morton, newly-elected Potentate of the Long Beach Shrine. Potentate Morton is Senior Judge of the Riverside Superior Court. Nickle will be ambassador-at-large to Orange County for 1955; while Marcoux will be ambassador to the South Coast Shrine Club of Orange county. Marcoux served as the Long Beach Shrine's ambassador-at-large in Orange county during 1953 and 1954. The two Shrine ambassadors will represent the Potentate in all Shrine functions and matters in Orange county. Jan. Meeting of Ebell Club Kern-Miller Troth Is Announced Mr. and Mrs. Anton Kern of 510 E. Vermont st., have announced the engagement of their daughter, Barbara, and Clifford R. Miller, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ivan Miller of Fullerton. Miss Kern is a graduate of Marywood High school and her fiance is a graduate of Fullerton Union High school and Junior college, presently associated with the Northrop plant in Anahelm. Plans are being made for a February 5 wedding at St. Boniface church. VALENCIA PACKING HOUSES TO MERGE At a meeting this noon at Goodwin's restaurant in Fullerton the Fullerton Mutual Orange Association members voted to join forces with the Placentia Orange Growers Association and operate in one packing house and under one management. The move is designed to trim overhead and the many valencia groves which have been put to the subdividers are made this a smart course. As the Gazette understands this picture this move has been under consideration for along time. Both of the houses are in a strong position but feel they will be much stronger for a longer period together. J. H. Beatty is president of Fullerton Mutual, and Newell C. Christensen holds the same position with Placentia Orange Growers. S. B. McMurray is secretary manager of POG and Colin Baker is the same with Fullerton Mutual. The understanding is, if the plan is accepted by FM members that packing operations of FM will be moved to the Placentil house of POG and that the key personnel of FM will move and become integral with POG. Don't Forget California Tax Employers who are now preparing Forms W-2 for the U.S. Internal Revenue Service should also prepare Forms IT599 for the California Franchise Tax Board states Robert C. Kirkwood, the Board's Chairman. Employers must report to the State for each employee who dun FROM JANUARY 16 to January 23 is National Printing Week in the United States. And, although I view it through a biased eye, I believe it is of somewhat higher importance than, say, Miss Potato Chip Week, or National Dill Pickle Week. If, there be those who would confute my statement that there is anything which has had more profound impact on the progress of mankind than the printed word, then let him cast the first stone. (And anyone who is able to twist and contort the language like that should be stoned). It is wonderful to be one of that great fraternity which prints words and sentences for people to read, and this includes not only those who put the words together, but those who daily work to get those words into type and who manipulate the complex and often baffling machines which actually print those words and thoughts on paper. As are all things, the art of printing is viciously abused. It is used as a diabolical weapon by many, such as your dictators who rule what is to be printed and read. Such power to determine what people shall or shall not read is the most coveted of those who would hold their subjects in fear and ignorance Hitler did it. So did Mussolini. The Russian bosses do it. So do Juan Peron and Francisco Franco. It is going on all around us. Some like to hide it behind a miasmic and smothering cloak of what they call religion. Let the people read, let knowledge spring forth through the printed word, as the seedling thrusts forth its greening sprout at springtime after a winter of dormancy and darkness. Verily I say unto you: When the Good Lord said "let there be light" surely he must have had a printer in mind. Jan. Meeting of Ebell Club The January meeting of the Anaheim Ebell society at which members of the Junior Ebell society were guests of honor revealed an interesting calendar of events for the next several months. Mrs. Harry Horn was in the chair. She extended a welcome to members and guests to which Mrs. Robert Loomis, first vice-president of the Junior Society, responded. Mrs. Charles Pearson, representing the program committee, outlined the February meeting which will feature a lecture by John Morley, newspaper correspondent, which will take as its topic "Peace—Its Prospects—Its Price." A fun program is being planned for the March meeting when noted humorist and monologist Franklin Lacey will entertain. Federation chairman, Mrs. John Bovee, and that the club will host the Orange County Federation Board meeting on Feb. 11 in the Anaheim Ebell clubhouse. Mrs. James Patterson, membership chairman, introduced five new members of the organization as follows: Mmes. O. Harold Bratt, C. B. Cook, W. H. Carrier, George Royer and Miss Betty Wood. Miss Caroline Leonetti, well-known fashion authority, presented a sparkling discourse on charm entitled "Accent on You." Decorations were done by Mrs. F. E. Charles and Mrs. Albert Cranston, while Mrs. Leo Frils and Mrs. E. H. Kersten were lunch-eon chairmen. Don't Forget California Tax Employers who are now preparing Forms W-2 for the U.S. Internal Revenue Service should also prepare Forms IT599 for the California Franchise Tax Board states Robert C. Kirkwood, the Board's Chairman. Employers must report to the State for each employee who during 1954 was paid $2,000 or more if single, and $3,500 or more if married. Payments must be reported for services rendered in California even though the employee resided in some other state. Also if the employee is a resident of California, a Form IT599 must be filed even though the service were performed outside California. Copies of Federal Form W may be used in lieu of Staform IT599 provided it is clearly indicated whether the employee is single or married and that must be accompanied by Form IT596. They must be filed with the Franchise Tax Board on or before Tuesday, Feb. 15. Carter To Lead March of Dimes Clyde Carter will head the 19th March of Dimes in Anaheim, was disclosed Monday as the leader of community chairmen for the polio fund drive was announced by John McKittrick, of Trust chairman of Orange County Charter, National Foundation for fantile paralysis. Sheriff James A. Musick is general chairman of the March Dimes in Orange county. McKittrick's announcement chairmanships was made at March of Dimes kickoff luncheon in Villa Marino cafe, Balboa land, when the 1955 fund drive got under way officially. No Open in April for the complete services to the ever-growing area, the California on or about April 15 branch at Center and Clau-ets, in Anaheim. A office of Anaheim bank of America will be remodeled on both floor and mezzanine, King, president of the Bank, said, to meet financial needs of Anaheim. Amendment of the Anaheim will be one of the first Los Angeles for Calinage Anaheim. Company has 44 branches Angeles county, and has recently extended into neigh-erange county. Mergers being planned of the Oil Fields National Pomona, as soon as share-approve. Social Security Officials to Visit A representative of the Social Security Administration District Office in Santa Ana will be at the office of the California Department of Employment at 233 E. Commonwealth, Fullerton, at 12:30 p.m., on Wednesday, January 19, 1955, J. H. Wootton, District Manager, announced today. This is one of the regular visits of the Old-Age and Survivors Insurance representative, which are scheduled for the third Wednesday in each month. Edison Co. Has New Fullerton Manager J. L. Walbridge, assistant district manager of Southern California Edison Company's Santa Ana district since 1953, has been appointed manager of the company's Fullerton district, according to an announcement by J. H. Mead, Edison vice-president. Mr. Walbridge joined the Edison organization in 1934 as an assistant sales bookkeeper in Pasadena. Later he transferred to the company's Alhambra district Ground Breaking For Richfield Plant Scheduled Soon Ground will be broken within a week by the Richfield Oil Corp. for a $2,500,000 research and development center on the west edge of Anahelm, it was announced by Charles S. Jones, president. The site, 20 acres bordering the Santa Ana Freeway, is part of a 115-acre tract set aside by Gateway Property Co. of Los Angeles on a modern, parklike industrial development. The project will comprise five main buildings and three small auxiliary structures, parking areas, utility equipment and landscaping. Research, development and technical service activities now conducted at the Richland refinery laboratory near Long Beach will be transferred to the new center where they will be expanded, Jones said. Control laboratory work, however, through which exacting quality standards for gasoline and other petroleum products are maintained, will be continued at the refinery laboratory, accord- Miller Troth Announced and Mrs. Anton Kern of Bermont st., have announced engagement of their daugher, and Clifford R.
