Driving Safety Program Is Inaugurated by the President
A program in safety, inaugurated by President Eisenhower, and designed to reduce accidents and operating costs of government vehicles, is being started at the Anaheim post office.
The first meeting of post office drivers was held on Aug. 24, 1954, and was attended by all employees who operate the trucks. Postmaster Louis Hoskins opened the meeting with a brief outline of the purpose of the program, emphasizing that it was of utmost importance for all drivers to observe all traffic laws and to practice courtesy at all times.

Metopolitan Water Tax Rate Drops
For the fifth successive year, the Metropolitan Water District tax rate has been reduced. This time the levy by action of the District Board of Directors was cut from the current rate of 25c per $100 of assessed valuation to 23c for the year 1954-55.
Chairman Joseph Jensen of the District's Board of Directors stated that the tax reduction authorized today (Aug. 20) has been made effective despite the fact that the Water District is now engaged in a major $52,000,000 aqueduct extension program to meet the constantly increasing need for Colorado River water in the homes and industries of Southern California.
Action of the District Board in authorizing the tax reduction was taken on the recommendation of its Finance Committee and Controller Albert W. McKinlay. Also approving the tax cut was Robert B. Diemer, General Manager and Chief Engineer Since the District person discussed the traffic problem and laws in Anaheim and led his satisfaction that a program was being begun.
The program in the local office is under the immediate direction of Ceill Peterson, local office. Mr. Peterson passed a similar course of instructors in Los Angeles. Statistics to show the need driver's training program showed that good driving not only lower the accident but would also increase mileage and the life of brakes, etc.
In the future, all post-truck operators will be required to successfully pass the course in order to operate trucks, stated Post-Hoskins.

WHAT'S DOING
H. I. Perry, your Telephone Manager in Anaheim
Classroom in the sky
You might not guess it, but these men are going to school. They're learning how to climb telephone poles safely and to string lines that will carry your calls. This course is just one of many given in telephone schools. Others — lasting anywhere from three days to six months — train operators, business office people, installers, and the like. Such training gives telephone people the skills they need to do their jobs faster, better, cheaper ... and more safely, too. Thus, they're better able to bring you good phone service that's low in price. Pacific Telephone works to make your telephone a bigger value every day.

"FOURTH...Every important additive known to petroleum science for improving gasoline performance can be found in New Richfield Ethyl. Not just a "spark plug additive," or a "carburetor additive," but every important additive.
FIFTH...Before Richfield introduced their superior fuel they put it through thousands of tests—in laboratories...in mountain snow...desert heat...ocean fog...city traffic and open highways...in all kinds of automobiles, new, old, middle-aged.
"But how New Richfield Ethyl performs in your own car is the only real test. Give it a fair test and you'll agree all gasolines are not alike. You'll say It's Best,' or get Double Your Money Back like the Guaranty says. No other petroleum company has ever dared make this offer!"

A long distance visit costs so little
How long has it been since you heard the voices of far-away loved ones—friends you haven't seen for ages? A visit by long distance is the next best thing to being there in person. It means so much and cosbs so little. You can call coast to coast—clear to Boston for example—for only $2.00 per tax. That's the rate for three-minute "station" after 6 P.M. weekdays all day Sunday. Calls shorter distances naturally cost even less. Why not go to send your love—your friendship across the mall by long distance tonight?
Promoted to management
Mrs. Mary Marksity was recently promoted to Office Supervisee at the Anaheim Test Center. She started her career with Ohio Beephone Company in 1938 where she worked for five years as a supervisor and Supervisor in the Traffic Department.
In 1946 she moved to California where she went to work for the Pacific Telephone & Telegraph Company as an Operator again.
In 1952 she was transferred to the District Plant Superintendent's Office as a Stenographer and Plant Reports Clerk.
She now resides in this area with her husband Wally and her two daughters, Barbara who enters college in the Fall, and Rene a Junior High student.

REDLANDS ADMITS THREE FROM ANAHEIM
Three hundred and fifty-two new students, including Kay Ellen Pierst, 1134 Louise Drive, Joyce Ladys Modell, 18342 Santa Ana Canyon Rd., and Gilbert Craig Gottger, 554 So. Indiana St., from Anaheim, have been admitted to date for the fall semester at the University of Redlands, Dr. Warren Mild, director of admissions, announced today.
He said 250 of these will be reshmen, with the remainder distributed in other undergraduate and graduate ranks. Said Dr. Mild.
We are pleased to note that our admission applications have shown 11½ per cent increase over last year." Applications, particularly from men, will be accepted until September 15.
Orientation begins and dormitories open for the fall semester at 9 a.m., Wednesday, September
WORLD'S NEWEST SHOTGUN
The world's first semi-automatic shotgun that stays on target shot after shot as fast as the trigger is pulled has just been unveiled by Winchester after 16 years of research.
To the nation's 20 million shooters, one important result of the new Model 50's unique design is that recoil is 30 per cent softer than the average semi-automatic.
The Model 50 is the world's first self-loading shotgun with a non-recolling barrel. A new-type independent chamber which moves less than one-tenth of an inch starts the entire cycle of operation. The new design completely eliminates the slap and clatter usually associated with a semi-automatic.
To the shooter who catches himself finching, or who dislikes the "double-shuffle" of an automatic, the big news is pictured in the two graphs above. They compare the recoil effect of the new Winchester with that of an average self-loader.
The lines at the bottom of each graph represent duration of recoil. The wavy lines show the force of recoil as measured on an oscilloscope. The energy from the recoil of all shotguns using the same ammunition is always the same. But the conventional 12 gauge semi-automatic reaches a maximum force of 130 pounds abruptly.
Recoil of the Model 50 is "easier" on the shooter because it is spread over more time. The maximum is only 93 pounds. Thus, while the recoil of a conventional auto-loader can be described as a punch, recoil of the new Model 50 is a gradual pushing action.
