IN THE DAYS OF LONG AGO From the Files of Anaheim Gazette By MRS. HENRY KUCHEL 75 Years Ago We have been shown some gold-bearing rock taken from a mine in Jone Valley, San Bernardino county, by Messrs. Halberstadt and J. B. Pierce. A quantity of the rock will be sent to San Francisco for assay. Osphen Lodge No. 237, I.O.O.F., has elected the following officers: Max Nebelung, N. G.; L. Wartenburg, V. G.; R. Wenzel, R. S.; F. A. Korn, treasurer. Rev. A. G. L. Trew, rector of St Michael's Episcopal church will remove to Santa Barbara in a week or two. We regret the necessity which makes this change necessary, for Mr. Trew and his accomplished wife are held in the very highest esteem by all who have the honor of knowing them. The regret with which everyone speaks of their departure attests the kindly feeling of the community towards them. Mr. Tew's successor in the Episcopal church here has not yet been named. The loss of grapes by pilfering has proved a very serious annoyance to our vinters in former years, and now that the value of the grape is so great, it has become necessary to adopt measures to protect the vineyards from the raids of vicious or thoughtless persons. Mr. D. K. Williams has been employed as a patrol and has been made a deputy of the Town marshal so as to have the power of arresting anyone found stealing grapes. He will begin his duties about the middle of this month, at which time the grapes will be getting ripe and tempting to lawless appetites. Anaheim Fire Company elected the following officers on Monday night: D. R. Payne, foreman; H. A. Stough, assistant foreman; E. M. Ferguson, secretary; A. C. Roques, treasurer. Ed Pelligren has opened a jewelry store in Santa Ana and his brother, Alfred, is successfully conducting a photographic studio at the same place. Among the visitors to Anaheim yesterday was Judge Sepulveda and Prof. S. W. Burke. It is five years since the Judge has visited Anaheim and the changes that have been wrought in that time struck him very favorably. The Grand Jury convened on the 21st and the term trial jury on the 27th. Deputy-Sheriff Barham will call the following as Grand Jurors: Dr. Geo. H. Bailey, Mr. A. Mendelson, Theo. B. Anaheim; J. M. Chapman, tain Valley. Also for the four Term Trial Jurors, G. R., and Jos. Bennerscheidt, An. The Fire Company will torchlight parade on Wednesday. A couple of fine blankets stolen from the yard of Mrs. ling on Monday night. Indian point to an Indian as the thief. W. M. McFadden has been pointed commissioner to Jon Irrigation Company. About half past three o'clock morning a fire out in Dr. Jones' office in ey. The drug store of Mr., and Franklin's warehouse ter with Dr. Jones' office, destroyed, the loss being est at $8000. Insured for $3500. Dr. Reeves and Mr. Baruq of the more respectable and ential citizens of Downey, each other last Saturday, body was hurt. George C. Perkins, the R.Can candidate for governor ex-governor Pacheco will attend the people of Santa Ana on day evening and the citizens' neighboring village are pro- to give them a hearty wee.The nomination of these gen- seems to be exceedingly p with the Republicans of thion and their election in Sober is pretty generally con- Mr. Isaac Cohen of An The loss of grapes by pilfering has proved a very serious annoyance to our vinters in former years, and now that the value of the grape is so great, it has become necessary to adopt measures. A couple of fine blankets were stolen from the yard of Mrs. Prohbing on Monday night. Indications point to an Indian as the thief. W. M. McFadden has been appointed commissioner to the Cannon Irrigation Company. About half past three o'clock yesterday morning a fire broke out in Dr. Jones' office in Downy. The drug store of Mr. Brown and Franklin's warehouse together with Dr. Jones' office, were destroyed, the loss being estimated $8000. Insured for $3500. Dr. Reeves and Mr. Baruch, two of the more respectable and influential citizens of Downey, shot at each other last Saturday, but nobody was hurt. George C. Perkins, the Republican candidate for governor, and Governor Pacheco will address the people of Santa Ana on Thursday evening and the citizens of our neighboring village are preparing to give them a hearty welcome. The nomination of these gentlemen seems to be exceedingly popular with the Republicans of this season and their election in September is pretty generally conceded. Mr. Isaac Cohen of Anaheim disclaims being a candidate for tax collector. The L. Cohen who is a candidate, resides in Los Angeles. Mr. Fred Upson of Centralia has our thanks for a box of very fine peaches. Mr. Geo. C. Hall, late principal of the Orange school, has been appointed to the Pasadena school and Mrs. Hall is to take charge of the school at Orangethorne. Mr. Barber has accepted the charge of Amity school, south of Orange. 50 Years Ago Peter Syre has received letters from his wife and Fritz Ruhnman who are visiting relatives in Germany and are enjoying their visit. The Directors of the Chamber of Commerce are making efforts to open permanently the new quarters in the Ruhnmann block, with a large exhibit of the products at Anaheim and vicinity. Many contributions have been promised for the exhibit. The Buena Park Condensing factory is preparing a handsome exhlpit which it is said, will excel anything heretofore put out by the company, and will be given a special place in one of the show windows. Early next week a wagon will be sent around to gather up the contributions promised by ranchers and manufacturers and it is hoped that all will be ready. Those of our citizens who have been accustomed to the luxury of having their table butter from Heterbrink's Flacentilla dairy, will announce on the part of Mr. Heterbrink that he will in future discontinue the sale of butter to private parties. Mr. Heterbrink has decided to sell his cows, and having amassed a competency will spend the evening of life in comfort at the old home, under his own vine and fig tree. We shall miss the weekly calls of the dairy wagon, with its wealth of butter and other good things, punctually arriving at noon on Saturdays. The day will hardly be what it used to be, with Dick Heterbrink's voice calling, "Whoa, Emma," to the nag, we have all become acquainted with. This world of ours is not one continual round of pleasure after all. Steve Cottler and his family are spending a vacation at San Juan Hot Springs. Frank Fox and Herman Benner-scheldts went hunting doves up the ditch Sunday and bagged upward of eighty. Mrs. R. Dunn underwent a surgical operation on Monday by Drs. Bickford and H. A. Johnston. She is getting along nicely: MRS. WILLIAMS HOSTESS TO MARYWOOD AUXILIARY Mrs. Ernest Williams presided at the recent meeting of the Marywood Auxiliary Ways and Means committee at her home at 707 N. Los Angeles St. Co-chairmen, Mrs. John Larson and Mrs. Victor Pelzer led a discussion of plans for the season's first social affair to be held sometime in September.
