82 YEARS OF DEVOTION TO ALL THAT ANAHEIM ORANGE COUNTY'S OLDEST NEWSPAPER ESTABLISHED IN 1870 PUBLISHED EVERY THURSDAY VOLUME LXXXIII ANAHEIM, ORANGE COUNTY, CALIFORNIA, Calif. Standard Oil Company 'Firsts' Include Research Subsidiary Work In 1876, a small company, later a part of Standard of California, brought in California's first successful well, flowing 30 barrels daily. Today, the company's U.S. production totals nearly 125,000,000 barrels yearly from 7,000 wells. In addition, its share of affiliates' production in the eastern hemisphere totals 100,000,000 barrels annually. The parent company, it subsidiaries and affiliates operate producing properties in 10 states and seven foreign countries. Also in 1876, a predecessor company built California's first refinery, at Newhall, with 22,000 barrels capacity annually, principally kerosene and grease. To-day, Standard and its wholly-owned subsidiaries operate six major refineries in the United States with a 150,000,000 barrel capacity yearly. They manufacture more than 1000 products. A Standard subsidiary also operates five asphalt refineries in the U.S., and affiliated companies operate 10 oil refineries in eight foreign countries. California's first pipe line—seven miles long—was constructed by a Standard predecessor in 1878. Today, Standard of California and wholly-owned subsidiaries maintain hundreds of miles of pipe line across eight western states and also have pipe line interests in Arabia and Canada. (ADVERTISEMENT) Tear-Drop Trailer Called Ideal for Vacation Trips The two-wheel tear-drop, or "sleeper" trailer is the motorist's answer to cheap, care-free vacations. It is also ideal for short week-end fishing trips, or overnight trips. I have a light but sturdy one for sale at a reasonable figure—and the only reason I am selling it is to raise a down payment on a station wagon. It is equipped for utensils, etc., and plenty of storage space for food and other gear. Strong and ruggedly built, yet nice looking. Tires are almost like new, and this buggy trails as light as a feather; you don't even know it is attached to your car. Rugged steel frame underneath assures long life. Will also include good bumper hitch (you don't need special frame-bolted hitch for this, and of course, no trailer brakes.) Also, will throw in good Coleman gas stove. Has 1954 license. When you consider the saving on motel bills, you are losing this class. In 1884, a Standard of California predecessor opened the company's first marketing office in a San Francisco butcher shop lort. Today, more than 7,000 Chevron dealers, Standard Stations, airport and waterside outlets serve consumers directly in the seven Pacific western states. Wholly-owned subsidiaries operate through hundreds of independent dealers in the Rockies and on the Eastern seaboard. Affiliates abroad also market products in nearly 70 countries outside the Iron Curtain. Constant Research In its 75 years, the company has maintained forefront discovery of new petroleum uses, products and better ways of manufacturing. Today, California Research Corporation, with 1000 employees in including scientists and technicians functions as the research arm of Standard of California. The efforts and achievements of this subsidiary have kept Standard a leader in the manufacture of petrochemicals (such as the basic ingredients in detergents, paints and lacquers, and plastics) as well as foremost in the development of new and better automotive fuels and lubricants. Financial Position Pacific Coast Oil Company, original predecessor of Standard of California, was established by a few businessmen in 1879 with a capitalization of about a million dollars. By 1884, it was selling $350,000 in petroleum product annually. Today, the net worth of the company is more than $1.4 billion; net earnings are over $170. Vacation Trips The two-wheel tear-drop, or "sleeper" trailer is the motorist's answer to cheap, care-free vacations. It is also ideal for short week-end fishing trips, or overnight trips. I have a light but sturdy one for sale at a reasonable figure—and the only reason I am selling it is to raise a down payment on a station wagon. It is equipped with a wonderful innerspring mattress. Interior is clean and newly painted. Has a small wardrobe for shirts, suits, etc in one end, and four compartments with sliding doors in the other for assorted articles. Has two light fixtures inside. Built into the back is a neat little kitchen, with ample storage space, shelves, an insulated ice box which holds 25 lbs of ice. (One loading of ice good for several days even on the desert). Also small sink, ample drainboard like new, and this buggy trails as light as a feather; you don't even know it is attached to your car. Rugged steel frame underneath assures long life. Will also include good bumper hitch (you don't need special frame-bolted hitch for this, and of course, no trailer brakes.) Also, will throw in good Coleman gas stove. Has 1954 license. When you consider the saving on motel bills, you are losing money by not owning this classy little job. Oh yes, it has four small, screened and glassed windows which afford excellent ventilation. They are even equipped with little curtains. Vacation time looms, and the open road calls! Take this little jewel along for comfort, economy, and freedom from the necessity of lining the pockets of avaricious motel owners. Contact M. W. Hunter at the Anaheim Gazette, or phone KI-1-7536.
