CERTIFICATE OF BUSINESS
Summary of Business Conditions compiled by the bank's research department, the local manager said that although the unemployment rise continued to get headlines, a number of other economic indicators showed improvement over January. These included factory employment, industrial power consumption, railroad freight volume, building permits, real Estate activity, and bank debits. Of these, however, only industrial power sales were above a year ago.
The bank index of business activity in the southern half of California advanced in February, he said. At 393.6, the index was 2 per cent below 1953 and less one-half of one per cent below the average for the fourth quarter of 1953. Comparing with February 1952, the index was up 13 per cent.
The bank manager reported while as yet there in no clear indication the decline is over, the present wownward drift has been more gradual than previously.
Building Real Estate Strong
Building permits issued in Southern California during February were valued at $116,140,000, exceeding the January total by more than the usual seasonal amount.
Real estate activity in Los Angeles County was stronger during February than the preceding month. Increases were shown in the number of deeds recorded, the number and amount of real estate loans recorded, and the number of lots created by subdivision, Jordan reported.
Department store sales in the Los Angeles area declined slightly between January and February, but total factory employment increased slightly during February with aircraft employment reaching the highest level since April 1945.
Unemployment Largely Seasonal
The local banker said that the number of jobless in the Los Angeles area up by 66 per cent in the past four months should be recognized, however, as partly seasonal in character.
and acknowledged to me that they executed the same.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto affixed my official seal the day and year in this certificate first above written.

As women have become more informed about political and international affairs they want, and are equipped to take on responsible jobs in government in proportion to their influence in this country," she said.
She pointed out that "not only do women bring into the world of politics a new emphasis on Christian ethics, but, since it is recognized that government is housekeeping on a national scale, is seems only logical that women should be represented in the government to a larger degree than they are at present."
