"Registered voters in Orange county should read the fine print before they sign any initiative petition," California Taxpayers' association said today. Currently, the McLain old age 'pension' promotion forces are circulating initiative petitions which would freeze in the state constitution payments to the needy aged in California of $100 a month," the association said. Payments to the 5,738 people receiving aid as needy aged in the county during January, 1954, averaged $68.09 per person, with total payments for the month in the county amounting to $390,710. This state already is paying out more in aid to the aged than are Illinois, New York, and Pennsylvania combined, the association said. California's 271,334 case load during January was just slightly under the 273,395 total of the rolls for Illinois, New York and Pennsylvania. If enough people sign the McLain petition to get it on the ballot this coming November and if the voters should be hoodwinked into passing it, the added cost could drain dry the state's already heavily burdened treasury," the Taxpayers' association said, pointing out that the present law sets $80 per month as a maximum for aid to the needy aged, with the $69.12 statewide average for January. The McLain initiative petitions currently circulating propose $100 a month.
