LOS ANGELES ST—ANAHEIM—KE 5-2857 DEAL A Vicious 'Charity' Racket Exposed A study by the Russell Sage Foundation indicates that the American people hand out a cool $100 million every year to phony charities in the belief of course, that they are helping wortny causes. While some of these "charities" are out-and-out swindles, others are only slightly less crooked in that promoters keep as high as 85 per cent of the money collected. Legitimate charities, as well as the public, are the losers because of these rackets. The honestly-run organizations, such as the Community Chest, Red Cross, or the March of Dimes, often find it harder to raise funds after a "phony" campaign by some group has been exposed. It is suggested that inquiries be made from a reliable source before donating. Another suggestion is to make gifts by checks naming the organization as payee for this helps to reduce the possibilities of misuse of the fund. Dick; Cummings Advanced in Rate WASHINGTON, D.C.
